BRYANT SETTLES FOR $5 MILLION: Attorneys for Dr. Robert Bryant, Aurelia, Iowa, said they have settled a lawsuit filed by Bryant Beef Inc., against Cargill Inc. for $5 million. Attorneys said the settlement is the largest of its kind in the United States. The settlement also involves dismissal of a $1 million countersuit filed by Cargill against Bryant. The suit stemmed from a charge by Bryant that Cargill sold him feed corn contaminated with insecticide. Bryant claimed the tainted corn came from the Cargill elevator in Alta, Iowa, in late 1979 and early 1980. The corn subsequently was fed to Bryant's cattle and hogs. Bryant's 3,500 head of cattle and 35,000 hogs contaminated by the insecticide were quarantined in 1980 by the U.S.D.A. Nearly 200 contaminated hogs were buried while 5,500 were destroyed at Quimby, Iowa, rendering plants.
Wonder if Cargill was fined by the USDA?
