29 Palms Survey

Somebody referred me to the "29 Palms Survey" recently, I found plenty of references to the survey itself, it was difficult finding any results. The results seem to be in line with the impression I got talking to fellow soldiers in my last months of my enlistment.

" I would fire upon U.S. citizens who refuse or resist confiscation of firearms banned by the U.S. government"

This was a question that Lt. Cmdr. Guy Cunningham ended his survey with at 29 Palms, I think back in 1994. I believe he did this survey as part of his masters degree, it was not a survey given by the DoD.

Here is him giving a speech last spring. He gets into it a bit.

. Frighteningly, among service members with less than 10 years of service, 63% agree or strongly agree with question # 46: "I would fire upon U.S. citizens who refuse or resist confiscation of firearms banned by the U.S. government." Among new recruits almost 90% give the response: "If it's the law and they order me to do it I guess it's okay." Our federally controlled public schools have done their job.

Of those with more than 15 years of service, 87% replied "disagree" or "strongly disagree." Responses by members of the Special Forces Underground were unprintable; basically, there will not be many officers who give that order more than once.

Also, keep in mind that we have lost a lot of good NCOs due to frequent deployments, they are being replaced with the "next generation."

The SF responses was about the same as what I told the guys under me.

This is very scary.
I am glad oathkeepers is getting out there. They also are helping to "teach" the new ones about the real thing they are defending.

There was another military forum where I brought back up the discussion of Oathkeepers, it was getting pretty good. Somebody mentioning that survey was one of the last posts before a moderator locked it. It's important for this and other issues to be discussed in the military, they need to discuss and argue about what their oath means. If we ever had an event where they tried to do something like they did durring Katrina you risk having a "split" in the military. Oathkeepers has the potential to build unity and cohesion and prevent that from happening.
