375,000 pending immigration cases, Obama lawyers AWOL

Two top federal judges Wednesday said the nation’s immigration courts are in chaos, with the backlog of cases at an historic high of 375,000 for just 227 judges, leading to a minimum three-year delay in hearings for illegal immigrants.

In Washington to take advantage of the current crisis to demand a new court system, the judges accused the Justice Department of treating their courts like Cinderella’s abusive family by starving them of money and support and blamed the insufficient Justice funding for letting illegals “linger” in the country.

“Immigration courts are the forgotten stepchild,” said Immigration Judge Dana Leigh Marks of San Francisco. She was speaking on behalf of the National Association of Immigration Judges, which she is president of.

Fellow Judge Denise Noonan Slavin, the vice president of the judge’s union, said that the courts have the “status of Cinderella,” having to scrounge for supplies, support and money. She said that the lack of money forces judges to delay cases and that is “allowing those who are not entitled to be here, linger.”

During their appearance at a National Press Club event, they also said that the defense lawyers President Obama promised in June have not shown up. Obama pledged $2 million to Americorps, which was to supply the legal aid.

Asked if she had seen any yet, Marks said, “We have not.” Slavin, of Miami, said, “We haven’t seen an impact.”

While the judges said they are feeling pressure to speed up processing of the swarms of unaccompanied children crossing the border in the latest crisis, the caseload of about 1,500 per judge is bogging the system down. Marks said that it can take 15 months before the first hearing for an illegal is held, and then the final court session won’t take place for three to four years.

And the duo said the situation is getting worse — and may prompt judges to quit.

“It’s a high-stress job,” said Marks. She said that there could be a “tsunami of retirements.”

The two judges recommended that the immigration court system be given an independent role, broken off from Justice, and properly funded. Marks said that the number of judges should be doubled.

“We don’t believe the Department of Justice is advocating for us,” said Marks. “We need to have more money.”

Did the Messiah tell them to take a vacation?

What a cluster fark this president has turned out to be for the country.....well, if you're conservative he's a cluster fark. If you're all for stacking the deck with millions of undocumented democrats so that donks will control the White House and Senate forever, then everything's peachy.

My wife has been waiting for months just to get her alien registration card replaced...

we paid the fees,.. they cashed the check in a few days... we waited months for her appointment.. she went to the interview... and they took her info and picture.. that was months ago..

website says it takes at least a month to update to acknowledge they even saw her... (it's been months),..

we are now waiting for an appointment so she can get a "temporary visa" so they can have sufficient time to "process it"

funniest part.. it takes them a few months to make the stupid plastic card... once everything else is done..

If the field office or service center is meeting its goal for processing a form, you will find the timeframe listed in months. For example, if the office is processing Form N-400 naturalization applications in five months or less, then the chart will say "5 months." However, if the office is experiencing a processing delay, you will find the filing date of the last case that the office completed before updating the chart.

I am not sure if it the site was even updated.. but they claim it is taking over 8 months,.. and that is from the time they give you a "receipt",.

so for the judges to claim Obama put them on a 15 year vacation.. would not surprise me as the staff is on an eight month vacation already..

I figure she will get it and it will already be "expired"

maybe they should outsource to motor vehicles.. they can at least get you out in a few hours..

Steve...this may or may not help, but it can't hurt. If you have somebody in either the US Senate or House who is running for reelection, write to them and explain your situation...send copies to their local office in your area. You may not hear anything from them until you get a letter from either them or INS/DOJ instructing you to either pick up what you need at their (INS/DOJ) office or it is in the mail to you. Give your letter to their (Congressman's) local office a week and then call them about it. Congressmen can cut through that sh!t quick, fast, and in a hurry if they want to....and running for reelection is a great incentive for "want to".

It worked for me years ago, and it damn sure can't hurt. Those ID10T's who work at Immigration have been on vacation for decades. The ones who issue visas at the Embassies are even worse. Been there, done that, but got the wife here in spite of them.

Only contact their local office by phone, you'll do a lot better locally than with some hack in their DC office .

I am not to worried about her not getting a new one... she has a passport and can easily come and go with it.. we are just trying to comply with the law.. and I forgot to put the dripping sarcasm thingy up again.. besides she would be getting social security by the time they get around to deporting her..

I am more upset by the politics that the liberals are using to gum up the works..

beyond that it is total waste of money.. huge buildings,.. no staff,.. and just plain waste...

why have a website and computerized system for tracking the status of an application if they don't use it... ( I am sure it wasn't free)

like I said.. motor vehicles is much more efficient... :?
