41% in JPN won’t buy US beef

Poll finds over 40% of Japanese unwilling to buy U.S. beef

Yahoo! News Asia

November 8, 2005

(Kyodo) _ An Internet polling institute said Tuesday its poll of Japan in October found that 41.5 percent of respondents would be unwilling to buy U.S. beef after a ban is lifted on U.S. beef imports in the near future.

Only 22.5 percent would be willing to purchase U.S. beef, while the remaining 36.0 percent were uncertain, Interwired Co. said.

The institute's poll that covered 6,003 respondents also indicated that more than 60 percent were somewhat concerned about the resumption of U.S. beef imports that have been banned since the United States discovered its first case of mad cow disease in December 2003.

Blanket testing of all cows in the United States for the bovine disease was the most popular measure cited by respondents to encourage Japanese consumers to buy U.S. beef, the poll said.

A key Japanese government panel recently compiled a recommendation that would allow the resumption of U.S. beef from cows aged up to 20 months.

With that in mind, if our negotiator's true intent was to open Japan's market up the best they could to sell the most beef, wouldn't you think there would be no resistance to offering BSE tested beef? :???:

Haymaker, they will buy our beef. I would not put any credence into polls.
