4H Market steers from SE Montana

These kids brought their 4H steers here to weigh them and clip and wash.
I took a few pictures, but because of the shadows in the barn, they didn't turn out as good as I had hoped. What makes the little circles that you can see in the first photo, on the steers hind legs. My camera seems to do that in low light situations. Drives me nuts.

These are South Devon cross and usually place very high, in the live contest and the carcass:

Here are the girls starting to wash them:

good looking steers! I also have experienced those little circles on digital photos at indoor cattle shows. I always thought it was the dust in the air.

Their grandfather runs South Devon on his ranch, which is where these fellas came from. The steers from his place have been Grand or Reserve Champion the last few years at the fair and they always do great in the carcass contest too. These kids folks
make sure things get done by the kids and you can sure tell these steers have been worked with. There is another steer, a black one, but he didn't photograph well at all in the barn and I left before they took him outside. Thanks for the kind words, folks.

The two South Devon bulls we use are both from down there-the black bull was bred in Kansas and we bought him at Midland test and the red bull is owned by Jim Brown at Lodgegrass-I really like the breed but hard to find a bull in it that throws consistantly good udders-the black bull was the best footed bull I've ever seen of any breed and really cut a swath breeding cows-my kids show alot of SD cattle in 4H too-not very often you get one with attitude problems.

I bet they do well at the fair! Great looking steers, and cute gals, too!

Down here, the reds hardly ever do well, not sure why, but maybe the judges just prefer black. Every GC for the last 4 (and maybe 5) years have been black ones.......

I'm trying to talk Al into saving the little black bull we got from AZ, for next year's fair......I think he'd do better than Blondie's calf this year would......

Jim Brown is a good fella. Good cow man as well. I'd think though that his taste in cattle might be a little larger than what I gather that you like from your posts. Are they not too big for you?

We don't keep too many south devon females as it is-I use him almost like a terminal cross sire-we run our yearling heifers a bit on the rough side so the big ones kind of weed themselves out. Jim is a good guy used to visit with him every year at Leachman's sale-went on a pretty good tour of his place one time-he runs up against the Padlock in places.

His daughter Sherry is the executive secretary of the Saler assn. She's a better cow hand than most I know. Good people. You can't slip a junker by Sherry. She , like her daddy, likes them a little bigger than I do. She does like a good one though.

Megan's got a couple PB Devon cows-the only two we own but they are seal fat all winter and not big framed cows at all. It's all on what you select for I guess.

Do you remember who bred the Kansas bull? Was it showboat? I can't remember the name of his ranch. I can figure it out with a phone call or two or maybe someone knows him. I think he's in ks.
