59% Have Favorable Opinion of Social Security

Saturday, February 09, 2013

Most voters still have a favorable opinion of Social Security but lack confidence that the government program will pay them their full benefits.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% of Likely Voters have at least a somewhat favorable impression of Social Security.
Thirty-four percent (34%) have an unfavorable opinion of the government retirement program.

I am curious what the people thought that paid in for forty five years. Sending thousands and thousands of dollars in and then dieing at age 64. Did they ask them?

people like ss because they are to lazy or stupid to deal with making retirement investments. I'll bet the reason people like ss also is that when they die all the money they paid in goes to their heirs. Yep all that money going to their heirs is so great.............oh crap, never mind

I like it....I'm getting MY dam money back. Slowly but at least some of it. Will I get back what I paid in plus what it would have earned in 50 years? I doubt it, but knowing how I was as a young man I doubt I would have saved that money on my own that was withheld as social security.

One thing is though 21 yr olds will not save. They have been programmed to know the government will take care of them so it is real easy for a young person to say what the heck no worry I'm buying those cd and car stereo I don't need to worry about retiremt the gov will take care of me. That funeral payment of 250se odd bucks is sure a real selling factor

Were the ages of those surveyed posted OT? I have a feeling if the random calls hit the WORKING younger generation, the results would be different. My friends, nor I, feel SS will be around in another 30 or so years and that we are supporting the baby boomers retirement. Even though my 401k is market driven, I have much more faith in it then I do SS.

Sure, but why not give people an option. If I want my money to be saved for me, great. If I want to invest it myself, why not.

I have been paying in since I was 10. There is no way I will get anywhere near my money back.

Plus the retirement age will be 85 by the time I get there, and the death panels won't let me go past 68 as I'll be used up.

Maybe OT can explain to us what changes, if any, to SS have taken place over the years to increase confidence in the program?

Just 40% Expect to Get Full Social Security Benefits
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/social_security_medicare/just_40_expect_to_get_full_social_security_benefits

Among the poll's findings:

More than 88 percent of Americans believe that Social Security either is in trouble today or will be in trouble within the next 20 years. Fully 60 percent of all Americans under age 65 believe Social Security will not be there for them when they retire.

As a result, more than two-thirds (69 percent) believe that Social Security will require "major" or "radical" change within the next 20 years. Among younger voters, approximately half believe that major or radical change is needed today. The support for change cuts across ideological and party lines.

Voters reject most traditional Social Security reforms such as raising the retirement age, raising payroll taxes, or reducing benefits.

Approximately two-thirds of voters would support privatization of Social Security, transforming the program into a privatized mandatory savings program. More than three-quarters of younger voters support privatization.

the program is scheduled to pay out $134 trillion more in benefits than it will collect in taxes over the next 75 years, according to data from the agency. Adjusted for inflation, that's $30.5 trillion in 2012 dollars.
