88 GM Fuel Pump Question

I have recently bought an eighty eight chev with a three fifty. Last night I thought I had ran out of gas, but after I looked, I hadn't, and came to the conclusion that my motor wasn't getting fuel. Now my question is, Since the pump is in the fuel tank, would it be easiest to just put a new pump and sock in it, or to just get a used tank with the pump intact from a wrecker? Is it possible to rebuild the pump? And would a faulty pump cause sputtering when I let off the gas and let the truck into an idle or do i have other peoblems?

Thanks

The fuel filter would be my guess too and it should be easy to replace. Related to the fuel system is also the EGR valve (not too difficult to replace) and there may be a fuel pressure regulator.

If the fuel pump was the culprit, I would get a new one. Getting another '88 tank with original pump in it might just end up giving you the same problem again.

Can you hear the fuel pump run? Can you have someone check the fuel pump pressure before you start throwing parts at it? Nix on the used pump. A plugged convertor might act like that, as well. Can you have someone check it for codes?

You can hear the pump running if it is by taking the cap off the tank while someone else turns the key on. It should run for about 2 seconds and shut off.

My guess is the pump as they are only good for about 80,000 miles. Make sure you buy a NEW genuine GM pump. I bought both a Napa and a Carquest one and didn't get 25,000 out of either. GM one has about 45,000 on it now.

I am not sure on the 88 model, but if it is full of gas with that 32 gallon tank it might be easier to take the box off the pickup.
