A bill to further criminalize animal rights terrorism...

On May 23, the House Judiciary Committee will convene to hold a subcommittee hearing on HR 4329, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Now, hearings are generally kind of ho-hum events, but in this case, folks should pay attention. In fact, if you have the time on Tuesday morning around 10 a.m., East Coast time, log on to http://judiciary.house.gov/schedule.aspx, and listen to the live webcast.

The bill would give the FBI and other federal law enforcement officials additional tools to investigate, prosecute and imprison animal rights and eco extremists who believe destroying property, harassing farmers and researchers, targeting company executives and endangering lives is the way you make your point for change.

The bill is the product of yeoman's work by Rep. Tom Petri (R, WI) and his staff. It's companion in the Senate is S1926 by Sen. James Inhofe (R, OK), chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works.

During the hearing, witnesses from the Department of Justice, a major pharmaceutical company, the University of Wisconsin, and a 1st Amendment expert will testify as to their experiences as targets of animal rights terrorism, and their recommendations regarding this important legislation.

On Monday afternoon, a letter bearing the signatures of nearly 200 national, state and regional ag, science, entertainment and land use groups will be sent to the members of the subcommittee - and to the rest of the House of Representatives - urging passage of the Petri bill.

Congress recognized animal rights violence as a growing threat to domestic security in 1990, when at the urging of agriculture and biomedical research, it enacted the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. This was the first time animal rights violence against farmers and ranchers was recognized as a federal crime.

But today, the FBI says animal rights and eco-terrorism is the number one domestic threat in the U.S. In the last decade, the number of illegal actions has increased 1,000%, with targets including animal agriculture, the food processing and retailing industries, biomedical/biotechnology researchers and other animal users. The FBI estimates over 1,200 animal extremist incidents in the past 15 years have cost the economy $200 million.

What is even more chilling is the emergence of a new tactic by these radicals. It's called tertiary targeting. These groups – the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) -- aggressively attack and try to intimidate individuals and companies, and have now begun targeting third-parties. These third parties are individuals related to a targeted entity, or companies doing business with a targeted entity. “Tertiary” victims include family members, neighbors, friends, churches, co-workers, stockholders and companies providing goods and services to a targeted entity.

Imagine getting a phone call, the caller doesn't identify his or herself, but begins to describe in great detail your spouse's drive to work, what he or she is wearing, what your kids wore to school, etc. This is all to scare you into acquiescing to their demands.

I urge you to watch/listen to the webcast on Tuesday, May 23. And when it's over, drop the subcommittee a line and tell them what you want them to do.

have been hearing alot on this "alf" and "elf"...especially in the more "granola" areas of montana such as missoula and boze-angeles, but no chance of them getting away with much in our neck of the woods...about time they get taken serious by our government, however!! These groups will do whatever it takes to get their point across...even if it endangers human life!!
