A cattleman I know was kidnapped - updated w/bad news

I glanced at the article in yesterday's newspaper, but the name didn't register.

Today, visiting with an implement dealer, he asked if I'd heard the news about the kidnapping. I was surprised when he mentioned the guy's name and reminded me I'd met the fellow one day there in his shop. I immediately knew who he was describing as I'd exchanged cell phone numbers with him and discussed visiting his place one day.

Hope things work out. No contact yet according to my buddy.

That is what happens in a 3rd world country. Same happens in the Philippines. There is no way I would let my wife go back without she is met at the airport by an associate of mine and transported to the family home 6 hours north of Manila with an armed driver and another armed associate riding "shotgun". Life is too short to let a couple hundred bucks get in the way of loved ones being safe.

I hope things turn out alright for the gentleman.

You best watch out for yourself, too.

Usually one of the local police forces is involved.....this one occurred in broad daylight in the middle of a town about 45 minutes drive from my place.

Another problem here is that usually no one wants to get involved....fear of reprisals from the bad guys.

Thanks for the words of caution too. I'm always armed, always, and try to stay on guard in all situations. If the day comes when I suddenly find myself amongst a bunch of armed guys, bullets will fly. I'll likely die if outnumbered, but I'm not going down without a decent fight.

much like Brazil, hope everything turns out okay.

It will. It always does.

As I've said before, living here is something like living in the old west of the US except we drive pickups instead of horses.

So Whitewing, who is targeted mostly with these abductions, foreigners or is it landowners & businessmen?

I hope the fellow gets out of this situation soon.

I´ve never heard of a foreigner being kidnapped here.....at least not this type of kidnapping......along the Colombian border, most certainly a foreigner would be a target, but this occurred far from any border.

The few kidnappings I recall with detail tended to be really wealthy, or members of the family of the really wealthy.

I think it was back in 2005 that here in the city there was a series of kidnappings of kids of local Arabic businessmen. One attempted kidnapping ended with the victim fighting back, killing one of the kidnappers and getting killed himself in the process.

There was another kidnapping that was already a couple of weeks old and the death of that kidnapper lead investigators of the Federal Police to resolve the crime that was still in progress. The whole thing ended with a big shootout on a local highway between the Federal Police and the State Police who, as it turned out, were involved in the kidnapping! Something like 9 or 10 policemen on both sides were killed, as well as an attorney and the kidnapping victim who was in the car at the time.

It was a true Venezuelan coje culo. :D

As I said, often the police or military are involved at some level though I don´t recall the military ever receiving any blame.

Any word on the kidnap victim?

Thanks for asking BMR. I asked that question of someone late last week as it was approaching 3 weeks since the kidnapping.......they hadn´t heard anything. That doesn´t mean it hasn´t been resolved.

I also just called a good contact who should know something but he didn´t answer the phone.

I´ll follow up on it and let you know where it all stands.

I had met the victim in the same shop where I bought the Unimog. Yesterday I asked the owner about the fellow and was sure he told me it was unresolved...........that there had been no contact. But that was during a conversation about a number of topics and I may have misunderstood the "no contact" part.

I´ll ask a buddy today who was with me yesterday when the conversation took place.

I can understand the kidnappers giving the family time to raise the funds for his release, but this one is taking a really long time. I´m hoping that it´s not a matter of something going terribly wrong.

The news was not good. Finally found him this past Saturday.

Here's the part that really aggravates the hell out of me:

Delgado, detenido por el hecho, presentó seis solicitudes en las ciudades de Barquisimeto, Valencia, Maracay y Puerto La Cruz, por los delitos de homicidio, robo genérico, fuga de la prisión de Tocorón y robo de una entidad bancaria, con fechas que van desde el 1999 hasta el 2010.

El hombre también ha pagado condena en Holanda y Trinidad y Tobago.

A rough translation is that the guy who lead them to the body and is believed to have been the trigger man was wanted in various cities in the country for homicide, robbery, prison escape, and bank robbery. He'd also served time in Holland and Trinidad.

29 years old.

Sounds like it was the makeins of a kidnappen. They need to send up them manless preaters on the border like they been talkin about. White wing that's why we never did any business in ven. It aint been safe in a while and with the goverment its got to be worst.
