We leave all the pairs behind as we gather at night. Then in the morning we pair everything off the pivot into a pair pasture first thing. Then we turn the heavies out of the night lot and hold the pairs there and pair them out when we are finished. It allows us to pair out with out having someone watch the gate. The other lot that we have cows in is not quite as handy. We generally feed there then pair out so we don't have cows trying to get out the gate.
It's nice when you have to have someone watch the gate, that the dog will
do it! On our Ma and Pa outfit there was only the 2 of us. Our Zip dog made 3.
She was good to watch the gate and never met a cow she was
afraid of. Good dogs are hard to beat.

(as are good horses!)
Sounds like you 2 had an enjoyable day. It will only get better as the weather
forecast is for warmer temps.
