This is the time of year I really love- when calvings about over- grass is starting to grow- and you can smell rain in the air... :D I love to go around and look at the calves and try to envision how they will grow out before they head out to summer pasture...

This morning when I fed- mommas must have told the children to stay by the tree... 19 calves laying around the old rubbing tree..

Do I look like a future herd sire? Definitely will be a calving ease special out a Cole Creek Goldmere 31N daughter who had the highest WW Prime Time D806 heifer calf last year.....I'm thinking this is a Whitney Creek Bannon 730T son but will have to DNA...

This is my favorite heifer calf (not many registered heifers this year- all bulls with only a few registered cows left to calve)... She is OCC Magnitude out of a Bannon of Wye daughter...

Heres my favorite little bull calf- OCC Magnitude out of a Cole Creek Juanada Lad 81T sired heifer...Really have hopes for him...

This old cow had her baby and hid it in the brush- and I didn't find it for a day or two...Didn't take much detective work or DNA to match them up tho

Calving has been going good- altho we're over 80% done so things have slowed down a little...I was pretty happy- we ended up with 73% of the cows breeding up/calving on the first cycle...

Sounds like some nasty weather is on the way- so that should kick some of those old drag alongs into gear....Just as soon not have the wet snow-- but the over an inch of moisture they are predicting would be plumb nice....

Western Storm to Eventually Target Northern High Plains
Apr 11, 2010; 1:11 PM ETShare |

.A storm yielding strong wind, soaking rain and even snow will leave the Rockies to target the northwestern Great Plains on Tuesday.

Strong winds gusting 40 to 50 mph will sweep not only the northern Plains, but a wind area from Montana and the Dakotas south to the panhandles region of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Southerly wind direction will predominate, but northwesterly winds will hold sway in Montana.

Heaviest rainfall, potentially exceeding 1 inch, will douse eastern Montana into the western Dakotas.

In central Montana, enough cold air will infiltrate to turn at least a little of the rain to wet snow.

Thunderstorms will erupt with greatest frequency over the northern and central High Plains, but a few will pop up eastward to Minnesota and Wisconsin. Localized high wind and hail will be possible.

Next target for the storm will be central Canada, where the storm will weaken appreciably on Wednesday.

Your cattle look peaceful and contented, Oldtimer. Hope this next batch of weather just gives some nice spring thundershowers and forgets to blizzard.

I see your watchin' bull calf's mother is setting her gear for next year already.. 150# calf and cycling hard is the stuff!
Yeah-- and I see all the heifers are cycling like crazy....She is LeadOn X Double Rito 525 EAR-- and from what I've seen of the LeadOns they do make nice cows- altho like thisone- a little bigger framed than I prefer... Still no moisture except for a few spits of rain and a scattered snowflake last night.. Looks like it could rain- smells like it could rain- and that old east wind is howling like it does when it brings rain... And like Soap said-- I'd just as soon that wet snow stayed away- but beggars can't be choosers sometime- any moisture would be great....
