Dry

It's been dry.
And for more than just a spell.
I've been worried and pretty nervous,
And my wife can always tell,
Cause my smile takes some time off,
While my frown works overtime.
My soul gets hot and dusty
And my eyes kinda lose their shine.

It's been dry.
What grass we have is brown.
The springs are just a trickle,
the creeks have all went down,
til they hardly carry water,
just a wet spot now and then.
A trough that watered a hundred cows
can only handle ten.

It's been dry.
The rain gauge filled with dust.
We got atleast 6 feet of wind
Tried to blow away my trust,
In the higher power up above.
I know I shouldn't doubt,
But months without some moisture
Seems to turn my fears all out.

It's been dry.
I keep looking at the sky.
I'd trade a day of endless blue,
to watch a cloud roll by.
But the sun just keeps a shining
While the wind tears cross the crops.
All I can do is wait and pray
For rain with big, wet drops

It's been dry.
And humbled, I've become.
Fires are all around us,
Burning grass with every run.
Grass we can't afford to lose,
With hay so out'a sight.
Burnt ground left black and useless
While the smoke blocks out the light.

It's been dry.
This ol' desert where I dwell.
One foot stands near heaven,
While the other touches hell.
The meadows and the hay ground,
Have withered in the heat,
Hayings hardly worth the effort,
But to not, admits defeat.

It's been dry.
And I don't know what to do.
My nights are getting sleepless
And the days seem longer too.
It's borderline obsession,
As I check each weather station.
Channel 5 says hot and dry,
2 claims rain has took a vacation!

It's been dry.
Atleast in my zipcode.
Ranching friends in other spots,
Got rain that washed out road.
And I try not to be jealous,
Find joy in their success,
But inside I kinda wonder,
Why we also can't be blessed?

It's been dry.
I can see the end of my rope.
My mood has kinda soured and
I've almost give up hope.
The guys at morning coffee,
Have all got what I have got.
You can see it in their faces
and hear it when they talk.

It's been dry.
Til tonight while here I type,
The black clouds came a boiling,
You should'a seen the sight!
The clouds rolled in, the rain fell hard
We ran out and watched it pour.
And soon we all were soakin' wet
Left muddy tracks at the kitchen door!

It's been dry.
But we got near half an inch.
And it looks like more is coming,
Am I happy? That's a cinch!
Many thank's to God above,
For sending blessed rain.
To wash the desert and my doubts,
These tears I cry ain't pain.

It's been dry.
But it sure is damp tonight!
Over east I see a rainbow
And it's sure a special sight.
It's been dry.
But my smile has found my face.
My hope has been refilled and
My faith has felt God's Grace.

Great job H. We got nearly a 1/4 today, and it sure improves my attitude!!

WOW!

You had me right with you the whole way through H. Hopefully this is just a start on some wet weather for all the drought areas. I may be wrong but it looked like Faster Horses' area got a storm tonight also.

Thanks.

You captured the heart of every rancher who has experienced a drought, and then the feeling of a welcomed rain. How big a half inch can be! Thanks.

That was great there leanin' H. I remember the whole night when we got our first rain coming out of the drought. It was about 2:00 in the morning and I was standing out on the deck just letting it rain on me. All of a sudden my phone rang, it was one of my good friends knowing that I would be awake watching it rain as well.

Funny what a little water can mean to us.

good to see you paid attention back in 8th grade English class, good job, we got .16 Thursday, washed the dust off anyway :D

You assume i got to 8th grade! Does taking 6th grade 3 times count? :???:

Nice poem, and pretty much describes my feelings for the last 4 years, seeing those old girls go that I raised, buying better bulls every year for many years sure took the starch outa me.

good luck

That was one heart-felt poem, H, which most all of us can identify with.
I'm so glad it had a happy ending. Amazing how rain lifts your spirits.
When it's this dry, and we are watching a tv show, we notice how much
rain they get in the show. It seems likes it's always raining...
but...gcreek was right! We got .4 the other night. We weren't here, we were in SD and got a really nice rain there too. Hope this is the start of something
good!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing that poem. It was terrific. I'm going to print it off
and keep it. :)

Have you gotten any more than the teaser H?

We got the heat you sent on Friday and it has been getting warmer every day. It got to 88F this afternoon and that is hot for us. We pulled irrigation water 10 days ago and the hay has shot up with the temps. May be haying earlier than usual if the ground dries up.

Nope, just what i mentioned. But the weather guessers claim we have storms coming thursday thru saturday. Hoping for a repeat performance but will grin if it simply rains at all! :D We hit 104f today and supposed to climb a little before the weekend. July on the desert. Hope you get just what ya need for a bumper crop! :D

Fine work, H. I can see it like I'm there. Though I'm not a rancher, I empathise with you. Was feeding 3 horses last year, now I'm down to 2 and hay was RIDICULOUS, bought some all the way from Mississippi.
