A soldier dies.....

I just talked to my guys in Iraq this AM. I thought they were already home....BUT....they've been pushed back.

Last week....one guy was in the back seat of a Hummer on his last patrol before heading home....there was a gap between the armour plates...an IED went off...a piece of shrapnel came through that gap and hit him in the throat.

He bled to death before they could get anywhere near a hospital. 21 yrs old .

If they had left on time....he'd be alive!

I'm REALLY not trying to be disrespectful OT when I say what I'm gonna type next so I hope you dont' take it that way, but:

That's BS....it's too simple an answer.

It wasn't his time...if he'd been out of there at the time he was supposed to be...he'd be alive to this day.

These kids are not like sheep...."born looking for a place to die". It's not their destiny.

Sorry to hear about the young man.

But, you can't say he would still be alive. Hell, a piece of rock could have fell out of the sky, and killed him, too.

Granted , he was in a place where he was more apt to be injured or killed, but we can't second guess. It will just drive us nuts!

I'll bet he was doin' what he wanted to do when he died, and tho' he sure probably didn't want to die, at least he was doin' what he was doin', of his own free choice.

I don't mean to make you madder, but I just got to say, don't second guess it. If you start thinking like that, you could say they all could have been killed. None of us know when it's time to go, but we all will.

Hang tuff, and don't let this be a reason to sour you.

Hope you ain't mad at me, but I don't want to see you drive yourself crazy.

These were your adopted guys, so I'm sure you are more attached than to most.

There were ptobably 100 young men died in the US on that same day.

Where we are, doesn't necessarily make us any safer. Look at all the people who are killed on the road, minding their own business, each and every day.

Hang tuff, and don't let this get you down.

Again, sorry to hear of the loss of a good man, in the cause of trying to help others.

Yep- and he could have been sitting in a different seat where the shrapnel didn't hit- or his plane could have went down on his return trip home... I guess I have kind of a fatalist attitude- that it won't matter what your doing or where your at-- when the Good Lord wants you nothing you do is going to change it....There is a reason and a place for everything...

That just stinks. I'm so sorry to hear about your "guys" having to stay, and especially about the one not making it.

Tough as it is to take, I must agree with OT. When it 's your time,
it's your time. There are many times when someone should not have
lived and did, and vice-versa.

That said, I'm really sorry for your loss, kola. I know those fellas
were like your family. And he was too young, wayyyyy too young.

In this case and in the case of the guys who were sent back out for a THIRD tour of duty, we are leaving our guys out too long and should have either reinstated the draft or sent our a larger number of troops a long time ago.

There would still have been deaths and it wouldn't necessarily have prevented this death, but it's not right for soldiers to be doing THREE tours of duty in my opinion, or to have their tour of duty extended routinely because the Pentagon bigwigs are not doing their job well.
.

I've got to agree with you r2. These guys should get a rotation home. Funny thing is tho', every returning vet I've talked to, said they were more than ready to go back.

I think it's harder for us to worry about them, where we don't know what they are doing everyday. I'm sure life isn't too sweet for them. But my son who was there at the beginning, seemed to enjoy a lot of it. As did my nephew and neice, who were both over there and will probably go back. The young are so resilient.

Whether we should be there or not is better left to another discussion, but we sure ought to have more to rotate thru'.

Too bad our military got so depleated in years past and we don't have more today, then we do have.

Be that as it may, it still sucks when you lose someone you know.
