We have been looking at our late calving herd every once in a while, and a few days ago we noticed that a three year old cow was trying to steal the calf from another three year old cow. As these cows are calving in a large pasture we thought that if we separated them and moved them apart the "granny" may not find the calf that she was so taken with. But alas, some good plans are bound to fail, and she was with the calf again the day before yesterday. So yesterday I decided to make a trip around the cows and put the correct pair, and a few other pairs (for company) in a separate pasture.
A group of pairs. In a large pasture they seem to separate from the heavy cows. Sometimes they separate by age of calf also.
A couple new ones off of home raised cows in this bunch. They are really calving. The due date should have been around the 23rd of April, and they are already 25% calved out.
Had to take time to notice a few of natures creations on the way by.
Some old, some new.
Reminds me of the John Wayne movie The Searchers.
Could carve out our own version of Mt. Rushmore here.
Who is watching who????
Here is the "right" pair. Moving her toward the gate.
Finished going around them. The trailer is in sight now.
Moving bulls just before the day was done.
