A True 1000lb Beef Cow

Well, at least a couple of them will break 1000lbs once we put some weight on them. These girls came through the local auction 2 weeks ago, and my buddy is the brand inspector there. He called and we went, and came home with 5 in total. These were some of the few that had decent feet and udders, and you could tell they had just weaned a calf off of them. Some were dry, some were cripples, and some were plum crazy. The ones I bought are all puppy-dog quiet. Previous owner apparently loved them, but had no pasture for them, hence the poor condition.

Older cow, but decent structure, and @ 10cents/lb, hard to pass up.

Younger tan cow, 840lbs.

Smallest cow I've ever owned. 700lbs, but is absolutely the boss. Even puts the run on our bulls that she's penned with right now. Looks so funny because she's so tiny. She'll probably bring in a calf every year though without a lick of feed if she had to.

And again...

The other 2 are very similar, I just didn't take the time to grab pics of them. For a grand total of $690, we brought the 5 home. They're not most people's ideal cow, but I've always wanted some Highlands to see what they can do in comparison to our more "conventional" cows. Time will tell. They're supposedly bred to a Polled Hereford bull for end of April calving.

I'm running 30 1/2 highlander cow's on a lease deal their calves are from angus bull's and fit right in with the rest. They have some simmental in them so I bred them Red angus this year..got a few gray calves out of the black bulls.I know a fella who bought some that were bred to a Limosene bull those 1/2 bloods were pretty easy to look at and they really grew out well.

I probably should have kept the pics to myself. Now Northern will be tryin' to swap broncy colts for Highland heifers to cross with his EXT's. :p

Well that little 700lber has the horns of a Watusi and not really like a Highland. For all I know she could be a cross of some sort. She only cost me 6cents/lb, so at $42, I wasn't gonna demand registration papers.

$.10 and $.06 a pound? Dang, your market is definately a buyer's market........sure hope things aren't that away here, when we ship out the end of the month.......Al needs to make some $$$$$ on his cattle breeding project this year..........He put the $110 from our buyer's club donatio on his cattle breeding, but is still coming out a little on the short end, by the time he pays pasture for the year........

Those Highlanders seem like they'd do well in a cold climate...........wondering just how much of the bulk is hair?

Well I'd say you got one heck of a deal! Like you said with some feed they'll pick up just fine...I was wondering though, since I've never seen one in real life, is there a chance you can take a picture of them next to one of your "normal" sized cows so I could get an idea of how little they are? They don't look that small in the picture by themselves. They look like fun critters to have around, but in our sandbur country I can imagine that their long hair would be a magnet for those nasty burs...lol

Well by the sound of it, there's no other cow that will stay in the pen with her, not to mention standing close long enough for a picture . . . .

Would it help give a better idea of their size to know that the fence posts behind them are only 3 " tall?

I've got some Prankster semen we can fire into them and make some buckers. Skip Kelliher used to pack a Highland bucking bull called 'Van Halen'. I'd only trade a bronc colt for one broncier lol.

Tell y'all what, I'll get my Dad to snap a pic of me givin' them a treat in the morning. When you see that grey munchkin come up to my buckle, you're next question will be, "How tall are you?".

Hair on hides....and you'd have a new material for wooly chaps.

But at 10 cents and 6 cents a lb......how could you go wrong, I mean....that's awful cheap freezer beef, if ya was to take a notion.
