Limbaugh a spokesman for vegans? Say what?
By Drovers news staff | Friday, April 17, 2009

Several news organizations are reporting that Rush Limbaugh has recorded Public Service Announcements supporting the vegan-driven Humane Society of the United States. According to the Animal Agriculture Alliance, worse still is that one of the two audio spots promotes HSUS’ outreach to religious organizations.

One commentary by Wesley J. Smith, a senior fellow in bioethics, says Limbaugh supporting HSUS “is really against everything for which he stands.”

The Animal Agriculture Alliance has urged livestock producers to e-mail Rush today at [email protected] to urge him to further examine HSUS and reconsider his support of the organization. AAA also urges you to write your own letter expressing your feelings, but to get you started AAA has written a sample letter that is available here.

The first Limbaugh spot concerns our partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country to crack down on organized dogfighting and other animal cruelty crimes.
The second addresses our outreach to communities of faith, and the moral obligation that we have to be good stewards of all of God's creatures. (And despite what some bloggers say, these spots, which had been in the works for weeks, had no relation to the current controversy over the Obamas' selection of a dog from a breeder rather than a shelter.)

Rush Limbaugh Supports HSUS

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Rush Limbaugh, the bastion of conservative thinking in the U.S., has become a spokesman for the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS).

The move didn’t go unnoticed by cattle folks. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) contacted its members, asking them to contact Limbaugh and explain HSUS’ true agenda. Here’s what TCFA said:

“Fans of Rush Limbaugh have been shocked to learn that he has become an advocate for HSUS. In fact, Rush has narrated two commercials on behalf of HSUS.

“To hear the audio of Rush's commercials supporting HSUS, click here: http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/press_releases/rush_limbaugh.

“Rush is probably like many supporters of HSUS – well-intentioned in wanting animals to be treated with compassion but uninformed about the organization's real mission. We hope you will send a message to Rush at: [email protected]

“Please feel free to use all or part of this sample message:

Rush,

Because we share many of the same conservative beliefs, I am very saddened to learn of your support for an organization that is working hard to put all cattlemen, including me, out of business. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has long pursued a goal of putting an end to all animal agriculture.

I know you believe in doing solid research. If you really check into what HSUS is up to, you will find that – despite having $200 million in assets – HSUS does not operate a single animal shelter nor provide financial support for local humane societies or shelters. HSUS is nothing other than a radical political organization determined to force all Americans to eat a vegan diet and forfeit the unique nutritional properties of beef.

Many well-intentioned people have been duped into donating their hard-earned dollars to HSUS because the drive-by media refuses to expose the truth about HSUS. I hope your show will become a place where people can get the facts about this organization's real agenda.”

From your title OT, I thought you were going to describe a domestic with the wife. (sorry for the jab, couldn't resist)

These are audio files, so for dial up users, it shouldn't take very long to listen to these for yourself.

While exploring the HSUS website, I conducted a topic search using the word “vegetarian.” My search turned up just eight items, all of which concern merely animal-related college classes that include vegetarianism amongst their subject matter. Apparently, HSUS does not believe that promoting vegetarianism is a worthwhile means of protecting nonhuman animals.

When asked by one animal advocate to explain how someone could be the recipient of an award celebrating the humane treatment of animals, Wende Zimmerman, Program Associate for HSUS’ Farm Animals & Sustainable Agriculture program responded via e-mail: “The Humane Society of the U.S. is not now nor have we ever been a vegetarian organization, just as we are not a carte blanche anti-medical experimentation organization and we are not an anti-zoo organization. We advocate for the humane treatment of animals, period. Through that advocacy we work with legislators and industries to improve the conditions that animals (be they companion, farm, wildlife or research) are raised/kept in.”

I guess you don't understand the meaning of "public service announcement."

In the United States a public service announcement(PSA) is defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a formal and detailed manner. A PSA is "any announcement (including network) for which no charge is made and..."

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/P/htmlP/publicservic/publicservic.htm

And it's too bad you don't watch Fox News or you would have heard about this two nights ago when I did.

But I share your disgust. So I'll be encouraging everyone I know to contact Rush to tell him the truth about HSUS and to tell him how they feel about it. And if he doesn't change his position, I might have to quit listening to him.

Rush has always seemed to like having farmers, ranchers, etc. as part of his audience, so maybe he'll reconsider. But he's also got a big ego, so I'm not sure that he'll be able to admit that he made a mistake. It might be hard for him to admit that somebody duped him and made a fool out of him.

Hmmm...now that I think about it, Oldtimer - you and Rush are a whole lot alike.

Rush is definitely not a vegetarian. I hear him use the word "Veggie-Nazi's" all the time.

From Wikipedia: (on Limbaugh euphemisms)

Veggie-nazis
Militant vegetarians. The term has existed at least since 1999. [73] On April 2, 2009, Rush used the term to refer to vegetarians opposed to the 4800-calorie promotional hamburger sold by the West Michigan Whitecaps' A-league baseball team.

Do your homework better hoppy--Go to the EIG site- and find how much I've taken in subsidies/allotment money/loans in the last 10 years.....Probably less than a $1000 a year....

Then dig further- and find out how much I made off the cows/calves last year...

You can rationalize it however you want to, but the fact that it's already on the internet doesn't make it right to post it here. That's my opinion. Apparently, we disagree on how we define, 'right.'
