Adventures With Ed

One of my buddies is the local vet-just a great guy -very good with large animals-he gets himself in some of the funniest predicaments. He got a call at 2'00 A'M this morning for a caesaerian 50 miles away. He had to gather his stuff-fuel up and drive out to it. while he lost control on an icy road and ended up hung up on the snowplow ridge. While he got out to survey the situation he shut his truck door. When he went to get in to try and drive out he realized his keys were locked inside. In typical vet fashion he kicked out his back sliding window-crawled in and drove it out. the next 45 miles he covered at 150km/hour and was only five minutes late lol.

That does not surprize me about Ed, but is he still driving the old Dodge or did he ugrade yet? When he did our Bulls last spring it seemed to be on it's last wheel nuts then.

Now THAT is a vet to know. :tiphat:
We're down to one cattle vet in this area now and he spends about half his time on a route in eastern Washington. He has emergency backup for when he's gone but it has to be a dire emergency and don't expect them to arrive with a smile.
Funny to think that not too long ago this area was all farm land. :(

He's went through two vehicles since then lol. Some of our deals with the rodeo cows are pretty good-imagine a vet hanging out the window of the Jeep while i'm in hot pursuit of a crazed Gelbvieh cow. We did a drive by tranquillizing and got the calf out. The funny part was watching Ed walk up and try and needle her when she was stretched out having a contraction. she was on him like a padlock on a South Dakota ranch gate. The pasture we dump all the bad actors into never fails to amuse.

HARD TO GET A LARGE ANIMAL VET TO KEEP AT IT AROUND HERE THEY GET STARTED ALRIGHT THEN THEY FIGURE OUT THAT THEY CAN MAKE EASIER MONEY WITH THE SMALL PETS AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SOME OF THE WILD SITUATIONS THAT CAN HAPPEN ON THE FARM. WE HAD A REAL GOOD VET BUT HE ENDED UP MOVING TO BC INTO A PET CLINIC HIS SHOULDERS WERE SHOT.

One of our local lrg animal vets went out on a call. The guy didn't have any way to control the cow other than the rope he had on her neck that was then tied to a tree, which is a pretty common way of handling cattle around here. Most people won't/don't have chutes, head catches, etc, too cheap I guess.

The vet tranq'ed the cow...or she thought. Adrenline is a powerful thing. The vet poked the cow....nothing she was doped out of her head or so they thought.

Somehow that critter went off....the vet had to be airlifted out and surgery followed within about 45 minutes of the attack. Torn aorta, crushed shoulder, liver/kidneys bruised......I mean it was a miracle she survived.

I don't know how they finally got the cow off her to help her.

Now if they are called on a lrg animal call....if you don't have proper handling facilites for the critter, whatever that critter may be as they do ' exotics' also, they will not attend to the situation.

I don't blame them one bit.

I agree. Buy the chute before the cow.
Actually, the most dangerous part of working a cow on our place IS the chute. The vet's always knocking his head on it. I'm covering each thing he conks himself on with foam padding. I can't stand to see him in pain.

WHY DON'T YOU SEND ED OUT OUR WAY, WE COULD DO A INTERPROVINCAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM. I THINK HE WOULD LIKE IT HERE IF HE HAS THAT KIND OF SENSE OF ADVENTURE

Mine, too, generally speaking, but in cases of dire need exceptions must be made! We all need a good, hardy, adventurous and entertaining vet.
