Remember Afghanistan? Osama, 9/11, we'll hunt him down wherever he is, etc?

Apparently their president isn't happy with the way the war is being waged. Excerpts; link below.

“President Hamid Karzai called Thursday for a reassessment of the U.S.-led coalition's strategy for fighting terrorism, saying the current approach of hunting down militants does not focus on the root causes such as money, training, and motivation.”

“A clearly frustrated Karzai complained that the coalition's hunt for Taliban militants was killing hundreds of Afghans, saying that "is not acceptable." More than 600 people, mostly militants, have been killed in recent weeks as insurgents have launched their deadliest campaign of violence in years.
"I strongly believe ... that we must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," Karzai said at a news conference.
"It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. In the last three to four weeks, 500 to 600 Afghans were killed. (Even) if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land," he added.”

I dont get your point?
In Afganistan the US is pulling out and leaving it mainly to NATO.
The biggest disapointment over there are our so called NATO allies like the Dutch and French who are just setting up bases and who are not leaving their bases and who are not really doing any good and who are of no real help to us.
Canada is comitted till 08 but the talk is we will be there for atleast ten years.
The reports that I have been getting is that the Afgan people are happy that Canada is there. Most of the success Canada has been getting is due to everyday regular Afgans giving us information about Taliban and the Afgan people fighting along side of us.
Afganistan seems to be a success?
This drive the insurgents have going on over there is because the US is pulling out and they see NATO as weak. What they are trying to do is like the TET offensive in Nam. America had the Viet Cong beat after the TET offensive. Commie Gooks had nothing left. Nothing! It was a decisive battle and America won!
However because of the casualities of the battle the war was lost at home and we all know what happened.

My point is that Afghanistan is where the 9/11 plot was hatched and launched, where the "hatcher" and "launcher" lives. Yet because of his vendetta with Saddam, President Bush has turned Afghanistan over the NATO instead of pursuing the man responsible for 9/11. So far Afghanistan may be a success. But as the article shows, things are not going all that well. The President in Afghanistan is not happy, the Taliban are making a comeback, some attacks within 50 miles of the capital. The President has even armed some militia groups in Afghanistan because he thinks he needs their help; that NATO is not doing enough. But arming those groups can backfire on him, and us.

Vietnam, just like Iraq, was not vital to the security of the United States. That's why Americans turned away from Vietnam and are turning away from Iraq. I think we would support a long term effort in Afghanistan, because that's where a real enemy lies.

Here is the problem. The United States is the Free World. What I mean is that Canada, Briton, Australia, etc would be screwed without the United States.
If it wasnt for the US the world would be a much worse place. Democracy and Freedom would not excist as we know it.
The Persian Gulf Region is important. There damn oil gives them the money to be to damn dangerous to the rest of the free world.
Prosperity divides/ A common enemy unites.
This in my oppinion is why North Korea, Taliban, Iran etc need to have this Jihad or need us as an enemy. Its their power base.
If you pull out of Iraq right now who is going to move in? It wont be Canada or Briton because we are in no position to do it.
Your going to end up with some kind of a war lord in there who is going to use the oil wealth to terrorize or nuke us right here at home.
Nations like N. Korea or Russia would be all to happy to trade nukes for oil from any war lord they can do business with. After all everybody knows who their target will be.
Its a small world. WW2 should have taught you this. We can fight them over there or we can fight them on our home soil.
Ask the Dali Lambha how well pacifism worked for Tibet.

If the US is the Free World, the world is in trouble. Look at the freedoms that George Bush has walked over, our right to privacy, holding American citizens for years without an attorney, ignoring the Geneva Convention rules, eavesdropping on our phone calls, now we're finding that they have access to our bank account information, too. The United States is not the counrty it was when Bush was elected.

I'm not a pacifist. I understand wars are sometimes necessary; but Iraq wasn't necessary. Bush's "gut feeling" is not enough to send American soldiers off to die.

Its only temporary.
Look the same thing is going on in Canada right now. Years ago we had the war measures act. I forget what they are calling it now but its the same thing.
All democracys do this in time of war.
Who cares if they are tapping phones for certain key words? They can listen to me all they want.

This Administration has gone far past tapping a few phones for key words. They've bought databases from phone companies. They are linked into the main trunk lines of most of the major phone companies in the US and can track everyone's phone calls that they want to track, for no reason, without a warrant. They have also bought phone records from companies who obtained them illegally, to be used in criminal cases. They're doing that to go around the requirement for a search warrant for phone records. One group sued AT&T for allowing the government to listen in on their conversation and the government stepped in and tried to get the suit squashed because of national security risks! That court, at least, rejected their argument. But I'm sure they'll fight and try to keep it out of court as long as Bush is in office. After he's gone, they won't care.
