Amazingly enuff usually it just rides right up on top of the water. But since we had the hurricane last September, there's not been any water thru these flood gaps. It's been aweful dry. Now that we are gettin big rains....there's lots of trees and limbs (left over from the hurricane) that are comin thru along with the water, and takin out the tin. We've thought long and hard about how to do the flood gaps different....but this seems to be the most economical way. If you spend a lot of money buildin a real nice flood gate..most apt it's just gonne get taken out anyway. This way, there's not a whole lot of $ tied up in it. And it's fairly easy to repair/replace when needed.

I'm a little confused on what the tin is really suppose to do? Slow down the water or catch debri? Looks like our photography thoughts are the same again...I tried taking pictures of the hands fixing fence with the pliers,,but they didn't turn out as good as yours...one thing about it though, there's alot of fence to fix this spring,,so hopefully I'll get that shot! Our water is receding too...and more rain in the forcast...

Glad to see you got your water gap fixed. I haven't even started on fences here yet... or anything else. I'm WAY behind this spring. Thanks for pictures of green grass, I can hardly wait to see some in person :D.

It's to hold cows in...... because you just can't build a decent fence that will stay in one of these creeks. We have these where the creeks enter, and exit our place. You "HOPE" it doesn't catch debri...but they usually do, and that's when ya hafta make repairs or rebuild......The water just goes right on past em.....if they stay up.

Our brand new cross fence....well a big stretch of it is now all laid over....t posts bent at the ground where all the debri and water forced em over. So we gotta take out t posts...straiten them....then drive em back in....and tie the wire to em.

Best water gap I've ever seen was a cable pulled across a creek inside of a pipe with several pipes welded to that main horizontal pipe in a vertical fashion with nothing on the bottom end.

It's heavy enough to keep the cows from pushing it aside and will let the water through with no restrictions. It also swings up and out of the way when a log comes down the creek.

I've seen those too Mike.....and have seen them last quite a while...but then again, I've also seen them twisted and mangled when the waters rise and big stuff comes down the creeks. That's why we don't put anything more than this up. At least if it gets washed away.....it's cheap to replace.
