Ain't it the truth

"Under democracy, one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule — and both commonly succeed, and are right."

You're such a cynic, Van. :) Look at it this way: The Dems have a big majority in the House and a comfortable one in the Senate. So they don't have to prove Republicans are unfit to govern. Besides, Republicans did that for them. :(

Here's my favorite H.L. Mencken quote:

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

I think our country came pretty close in the last administration of achieving this prediction.

Whatever anyone thinks of Obama, I think it would be pretty hard to argue he is a moron.

It's pretty easy to argue that he's a snake, though.

I've always thought of myself as an optimist, but a cautious one. Yes, the ball is solidly in the Dem's court now. Let's see what they do with it. They've inherited a bad situation, and I still say they are to blame for some of it, even though most people apparently didn't see it that way. But make no mistake, things could get worse. I certainly don't want that to happen, but if it does, the Democrats will take the blame because they're the party in power. These things tend to go in cycles.

fff..print and paste that over your computer desk. Hopefully you won't have to repeat it in 4 years substituting on the word "democrats" for republicans.

I fully expect things to get worse before they get better. If we really go into the deep recession that some are expecting, we'll need to spend a lot of money to just keep families going, create jobs. I remember shelters being set up for families who had lost their homes, jbos, cars. Kids trying to go to school every day from the shelters. That costs money. Even if Obama ordered our troops out of Iraq the day he took office, it will cost billions to bring them home. If we're seeing daylight from this mess at the end of Obama's first term, I'll be satisfied. If not, there's no way he'll get elected again.

Why does it have to get worse? We have our unemployment rate is only now at the rate it was during Clinton's first years. And you hold Clinton out as a great President, why can Obama not change things quickly if Clinton did? Clinton had to do it with them Lowly Republicans having majority in Congress.

This all could be solved quickly, lower taxes for everyone not the welfare cases. Do away or drastically lower Capital gains taxes, lower corporate taxes and do away with the death tax.

Start drilling in Alaska and everywhere for future and quit crying about how it will not help us now. Do not mess with coal plants and go easy on environmental issues.

But first and foremost, quit bailing out people or businesses and giving away stimulus money. Some tough love needs to happen. Maybe it is time for Ford and Chevy to disappear much like the Edsel and Studebaker did. Let businesses see that if they are not fiscally responsible they will have to close!

More social engineering is the last thing we need!

You and I are on the same page there. Kind of scary aint it?

We really have no idea how far in debt we are. We know about the Federal deficit. We know about the $700B bailout. But the Fed has been handing out billions. We don't know how much or to who or what they're getting in return. These people are looting our treasury, while Bush removes environment restrictions to allow mining and drilling in fragile environments.

The Federal Reserve is refusing to identify the recipients of almost $2 trillion of emergency loans from American taxpayers or the troubled assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.

Pelosi and Franks were the one touting this bailout as a worthy cause and chastised the Republicans when they didn't vote on it.

Who's the ogre here?

Damnit, Mike, you're bringing facts to a debate with liberals. They don't acknowledge facts.
