Alabama Education: 36th Out Of 35 Contestants

Houston, we have a problem. Blacks and Unions rule the educational system here. Blacks are adamantly opposed to giving any teacher a test that is equivalent to a high school graduating test. Unions will not allow the firing of a teacher unless convicted of a serious crime.

The public school system is screwed:

Alabama last in federal education grant competition
The Associated Press • August 26, 2010

Alabama finished dead last in the latest round of the "Race to the Top" federal education grant competition.

Alabama schools Superintendent Joe Morton said he didn't expect the last-place finish, which he blamed partly on a lack of charter school legislation and a lack of help from the teachers' union.

Ten winners of the competition were announced this week. The U.S. Department of Education said Alabama finished 36th out of 35 states and the District of Columbia that competed for the grants, scoring 212 points out of a possible 500.

Reviewers gave the state low marks for a lack of charter or other innovative schools, a lack of alternative pathways to becoming a teacher or school principal, a lack of common core curriculum standards and a lack of support from the teachers' union for a proposed plan.

Paul Hubbert, the head of the teachers' union, disagreed with Morton's assessment. While the Alabama Education Association opposes charter schools, they were worth only 40 points in the competition, Hubbert said.

"Apparently they are trying to scapegoat someone beside themselves when they blame the union," Hubbert told The Birmingham News.

Gov. Bob Riley tried unsuccessfully to get legislators to pass a charter school bill this year.

Charter schools get taxpayer funding but are given more leeway than traditional public schools in developing initiatives to boost student achievement. Teacher unions generally oppose them, contending the money should go toward fixing traditional public school systems.

"Until there is support and until there is charter schools, we're not going to get a different result," Riley Communications Director Jeff Emerson said. "We're going to stay shut out until there is a lot of change."

Oh, I forgot to say that Black's are against Charter Schools because they say it will lead to Re-Segregation...............

What a thing to brag about... How dumb Alabamans are  :p

Montana has for years ranked in the top ten of the "smartest states" and some years were in the top 1 or 2 for public education....But Montanans place an importance on education- are actively involved with the schools- take school board service seriously- and put their money where their mouth is when it comes to supporting education...Seldom does a local school district levy fail to pass (except for the outrageous projects)....

And it definitely can't be all tied to teachers pay- where Montana is ranked
46th on liveable teachers salary- and Alabama is 13th...

I wonder what happened to Arizona- they rank #50 in the "smartest states" listings... I guess all the old fogies living down there don't think education is important...

Thank you for making my point..........................

Teachers Unions and Civil Rights Groups Block School Choice for Black Students
Acton Commentary ^ | 8/25/2010 | Anthony B. Bradley

Teachers unions, like the National Education Association (NEA), and many civil-rights organizations inadvertently sabotage the potential of black males by perpetuating failed educational visions. Black males will never achieve academic success until black parents are financially empowered to opt out of failed public school systems.

The American public education system is failing many groups, but none more miserably than black males. The numbers are shocking. The Schott Foundation recently reported that only 47 percent of black males graduate from high school on time, compared to 78 percent of white male students. This revelation is beyond disturbing because it exposes the fact that many public schools serve as major catalysts for the desolation of unemployment and incarceration that lies in many black boys’ future.

In many places the disparity between whites and blacks is nearly unbelievable. In Nebraska, for example, the white/black graduation gap is 83 percent compared with 40 percent and in New York 68 percent compared with 25 percent. The way urban city school districts fail black males is more disconcerting considering that black professionals are in charge. Urban districts are among the worst at graduating black males: Atlanta, 34 percent; Baltimore, 35 percent; Philadelphia, 28 percent; New York, 28 percent; Detroit, 27 percent; and St. Louis, 38 percent.

Why doesn't Montana have the same problems? Possibly because we didn't let them develop and bring them on in the first place...

It was Mikes forefathers that were too lazy to do field work and had to go get slaves- then didn't do anything for 100+ years to solve the problem created when they were freed...

OT has no comprehension as to how the Democrats have kept blacks on the "Government Plantation" using tax giveaways and kept them eating at the public trough ever since the failed "Great Society".

There is a growing animosity towards the Democrats by blacks who actually think for themselves.............................

Litte history primer:
1-The overwhelming majority of landowners in the South never owned slaves. Blacks were many times slave owners also.

2-No one had to "Go get" slaves, they were traded to European slave "carriers" by their own people and brought right to our doorstep.

3-History has shown that Democrats are the ones that have done a dis-service to blacks for 100+ years. Look it up.

4- My Great-Grandfather owned 2 slaves. Marasetta and Joi. When the slaves in the South were emancipated in 1863 those two stayed for rest of their lives on my Great Grandfathers/Grandmothers place even after my Grandfather offered them two horses and a wagon to leave on. They were treated like family throughout their lives. They even owned their own house.............which was very rare.

5-Not many Republicans belonged to the KKK during reconstruction or after. The KKK was comprised of Democrats by a long shot.

Your hole keeps getting deeper.................................

Not racist-- we have lots of minorities in Montana...Many of the old Montana cowboys were what are now considered minorities...

But there is a big difference between Montana and Alabama-- we treated them as humans and not cattle...We branded and sold our cattle while they were branding, whipping, and selling their minority folks....

if you can NOT or will NOT see this as racist then there is little hope for you.
who is the "we" you are talking about ot?
who is the "them"??
as long as you look at the world through "we" and "them" colored glasses based on race then you are a racist.
you are refering to "them" like you would a herd of cattle, like "they" are not free human beings with any say so in the matter.
as in: "we didn't let them develop and bring them on in the first place"
