Alabama, thanks for posting your cotton picking pics! They are incredible! I am obviously an aggie, but I have never seen cotton being picked before. As I am currently reading the book Let the Circle Be Unbroken, this was perfect timing. How many pounds/bushels to the acre do you get? How much do your pickers leave behind? What kind of price do you get? Thanks for any answers and thanks once again for sharing!

I am a lot of things but a cotton farmer I am not. I am just helping out the owner by running a packer when I have time. He was telling me that that he got screwed on the price. Something about a marketing association not contracting back when the price was up. I just don’t know what they are getting for it. But they have 1200 acres of it. I do know that last time I priced cotton seed for feed it was over 300 a ton. He may make more on the seed than the cotton.

I think the norm is one bale to the acre to break even.
I did here him comment yesterday that it was ashamed to make cotton like this and not make any money. But I have never heard a row crop farmer admit to making any money so who knows.

Don't it seem that way? They don't make much money and sometimes struggle to make any, but without them, we'd be in one heck of a tight spot.
