Al's Payday

Ya'll know that Al has been taking Cattle Breeding as a 4-H project for 3 years, now. This year, he finally got his first payday.
Papa shipped their calves last weekend, and Al asked him to put Blondie's steer calf in with them. Al got the check the first part of the week, but I haven't had a chance to share the gory details with ya'll, since I put in 45.5 hours between Monday morning and last night, up at the station......

Anyway, the calf was born the end of April, and weighed in at 550#.......ole Blondie did good! Even better, he brought a solid $100.00/C........after all the deductions were made, Al still got a check for $515.69. He's very proud of it, in fact, he got me to make a color copy of it, and the invoice, for his record book.

I was really glad for him........his calf brought more than a good part of Papa's did, Papa told me.........

Thanks for your kind comments, everyone.

He's been "hooked" since he sold his first one......back when he was about 9. My dad gave him a heifer (Maccaroni, aka Mogollon Roanie) when he was 3 or 4........when we moved back to Luna, we brought her with us, and put her down at Hubby's folk's place. She aborted calf after calf, we never did figure out what was wrong with her, and he sold her. I think at that time, she brought about $400, which he turned around and spent on a mare for his first year in 4-H, but she fell in a cattleguard and tore her hind legs up so badly during one of our Easter blizzards, that she had to be put down. He never quite lost the taste for selling cattle after that, though........

So, he's had some good experiences, and some pretty bad ones, too, in his young life.......
