I have recently heard of a widowed lady whose (supposedly) grandson called
her with a sob story and needed $8500. He used her grandson's name and
she said he sounded just like her grandson. He asked that she not tell his
folks. She got the money and wired it to Canada as instructed. Never heard
from him again and found out it was NOT her grandson. Poor lady.

I heard about that one a year or more ago and didn't think to post a warning about it.

An elderly friend was called by someone impersonating his age 20 or so grandson, using very similar language and speech patterns, even the voice sounded the same, with a similar story. Fortunately, he was a tough enough grandfather to stall, stating he couldn't get that kind of money without calling his bank. Instead, he called the kids dad and was told he was at work, and knew nothing of any travel, so when they called back, he told them he couldn't get his money and he expected the next phone call they got would be from the law!

I have heard of banks stopping payment on suspicious appearing checks and saved losses to fraud for customers, a GOOd way of an entity 'saving us from ourselves', as opposed to the customary attempts by our goverment to do it!mrj

What they also do is Say "Grandma" or "Grandpa" to get them to say the name of a grandchild.
A friend's mom had it done to her. Same sort of sob story. Her mom almost sent the money. She also got mad at our friend for not helping her daughter.
Finally had her daughter call her grandmother and tell her she was fine and never called her for money.

I told them about the scam because I had heard about it too. The Grandmother said the girl on the line sounded like her granddaughter and she was so certain it was her.

On another forum a poster told about advertising an irrigation engine on Craigslist. He got a response from some overseas guy with limited English communication skills who wanted to purchase the irrigation engine as a gift for his son.

Now that is a very thoughful father. What son would not appreciate receiving an irrigation engine as a gift????
