americans sour on trade

Sales taxes on food are a tax on poor people. Although foodstamp folks arent taxed. Tobbaco taxes are generally the same. Middle income folks like most of us pay those as well as property taxes on land, homes, vechicles and equipment. We also pay income tax. Taxed again when we rent a hotel room or take an airline flight. We pay fuel taxes and even taxes on cell phones. High income folks pay everything I mentioned as well as dividend taxes, and others and are taxed at much higher rates.

So it would seem to me that "Rich" folks pay their share as well as providing countless jobs when they purchase things with their supposedly "Disposable" income. Things like automobiles made by working folks or 7th homes built by folks like myself. They have earned the right to spend thier money as they wish by earning their money!

You and I pay plenty of taxes! And we spend what we have on groceries, and a trip or a pair of boots. Much less job creation but still helps fuel the economy.

So who isnt pulling any weight here? Those folks who are not working either through circumstance of lack of motivation. And politicians want my money and yours and folks who earn more than us to donate our earnings to them so they can give it to folks who pay little or nothing into pot? :???: How about they let me decide what I'll do with my money? If i want to donate to charity, I'll decide! If i want a retirement, I'll decide! If I want health care, I'll decide! How about they quit punishing folks for being successful or have a tremendous work ethic or have the guts to make a go of it? How about they stop thinking they know whats best for my money!

I wonder why parts of Detroit are being turned back into farmland after blocks of houses are leveled and removed?

Do a little research Burnt before you get too far off base here. Go compare the U.S. manufacturing to Canada. I love Canada btw. It's one of our strongest allies. I wish you fellas saw my country as I see yours.

There has never been a question about who is the bigger dog when it comes to manufacturing. There is no animosoty towards your country by myself in any way shape or form. And believe me, my country is far from perfect. By the way, I watch all sources of misinformation (news). The fact of the matter is, all media is manipulated in one way or another. Our one network (CBC) is just as left leaning as fox is Right. The modern day news is a bunch of sound bites sellected to produce an emotional response by the viewer, regardless of wether it is truthfull, slanted, or downright propoganda. BTW, I came to this realization after watching numberous networks (national and International) during the coverage of 9-11 and Katrina. How many foriegn networks or news sources do you watch Red Robin?

How is that durogatory? So if I say manufacturing is being moved off-shore I hate America? Give your head a shake.
Stay with me here elwapo. I'm not trying to be complicated but in Arkansas our vocabulary isn't very big so sometimes I have a hard time communicating my thoughts. When you said our country was going to be listed with the super powers of the past because (in part) our manufacturing was shrinking, and your manufacturing is at least as bad, and by some reports worse, how will your country fair? I wasn't meerly suggesting that our manufacturing capabilities were larger than yours.

Population 2008
#38 Canada 33,390,141
#5 United States 301,139,947

Canadian manufacturing output 2008 195B down from 197B a year earlier
U.S. Manufacturing output 2008 1831B up from 1756B a year earlier

...... am I missing something elwapo?

I agree. And dont have any illusions that the great white north will become a super power any time soon. We do, however, have more than enough of the worlds oil, fresh water, lumber, minerals, etc. The Chinese are starting to buy some of the oil companies and their reserves in this area. They are a big part of the move for the enbridge pipeline to the west coast and the terminal that will be at Kitimat. So while the James Camerons of the world are up here raising hell about the oil sands, the chinese are quietly positioning themselves to take our oil with no complaints. You may have to look at the view from the outside to realize that the rest of the world is positioning themselves to aquire what most Americans take for granted. Personally I think it is great for Canada to have another bidder for our oil. Times will be better for the Chinese, and much tougher for America, if the chinese have access to natural resources and cheap labour. At the point when they no longer need to hold American debt (t-bills), the scenario looks bleak for the US. Who will pay the massive credit card bill that your country has amassed? You think you have tax problems now!

Looks like pretty much they same per capita. Maybe we are a super power! I stand corrected

Are you speaking of public debt?

I would assume you mean this chart which lists debt owned by foreign entities.

Here's an interesting one...

This is the silliest discussion that I have seen in a while. redrobin, I cannot see why you are belaboring elwapo for his ideas when they are quite an accurate reflection of reality.

What I said about Detroit is the truth. And equally unfortunately, the same is true about Windsor, just across the border from Detroit, because it was also heavily dependent on the auto industry.

If you don't realize the extent to which manufacturing has been evacuated from North America in favor of countries that "boast" cheap labor then you are whistling through the graveyard.

I can see no relief on the horizon since our populations, in general, have become too fat and lazy to go out and work hard to do what they need to do.

Heck, we have orchards that don't get picked and fruit that rots because of a shortage of labor willing to do that kind of work for the money it pays. The orchard owners cannot afford to pay more because they have to compete with imported fruit that comes from southern orchards that hire cheap, often illegal help . . .
