One person here said to sell flag stone,it goes for 65 bucks a ton,how far does 65 dollars a ton go in gas millage just to transport it to a buyer.

When pulling the little 5 ton dump trailer is will cost about $12 per trip in fuel. That doesn't include insurance, tires, wear and tear on the truck, fuel for the caterpillar or backhoe etc. Just fuel for the truck hauling it in which isn't much at all.

The most I have ever done in one day with the little trailer is 9 loads.

Jackson Hole and the flagstone were just an example , lots of people nowadays have champagne tastes on a beer diet, Jigs is right, there are a lots of ways to cut corners, but people don't want to give up what they deem "necessities"
Christine Hadley, a 53-year-old registered nurse from Reading, Pa., says she used to be "a clotheshorse," splurging on pricey Dooney & Bourke handbags. But her live-in boyfriend left last year, and she has had trouble finding a job. Piles of unpaid bills forced her to sell more than 80 items, including the handbags, which went for more than $1,000 on a site called AuctionPal.com. Now, except for some artwork and threadbare furniture, her house is looking sparse.

"I need the money for essentials — to pay my bills and to eat," Hadley said.
Gosh hasn't there been a shortage of nurses for years now??? maybe she should have paid her bills instead of buying purses, and what does her boyfriend moving away have to do with anything?
When I moved down here, I worked at 3 jobs in town, plus helped out with the cows when I got home, my kids also wear $15 jeans vs. $40 and second hand stores are wonderful for buying brand name designer clothes at a fracion of the cost. There are lots of jobs around, but the key is you have to be willing to work at whatever, whenever. Any expense you have with looking for or relocating for a job thats more than 150 miles away from your present location is tax deductible

NN makes a very valid point.

We here, we have equipment and various ' stuff' and critters to eat if push comes to shove.

We don't tend to think about the urbanites of the world many whom don't have a need for a car let alone a truck w/ trailer.

LOL I don't know if there is any flagstone in Jackson Hole or not.

Yes I once loaded and unloaded it all by hand. I could only make $1500 a week on a part time basis doing it like that. But I bought a backhoe, trailer, caterpillar etc etc. Never intended to get in that deep but I did. If I were younger I would quit my job and do that full time.

Most patio stone has to be handled my hand but you can stack in on pallets and unload pallets off of a flat bed. Building stone and everything else can be dumped.

Most RNs are fetching way over $35 an hour and get huge signing bonuses each time they hire out. If you are willing to work weekends, you can sign up for 12 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday and get paid for 40 hours work. One of my sisters does just that.

so if the price of beef drops and the cost of shipping rises and you cannot make your bills......are you prepared to leave it all for a 1 bed room walk up in jackson hole?...Why not have more outrage over the rising cost of living ,gas prices and high pharmaceutical costs...how would you feel if your child had to go without the daily medicines they may need?...

just to ride a bus back and fourth to work in the city is 7 bucks a day..if your in the suburbs its 3.50 more each way so that is 14.00 a day...now add babysitting costs, food, clothing, shelter and heat.......no cable no computer...Those 3 jobs would not be enough...

Transits cost go up cause of gas prices, food prices rise cause of gas prices ...even if people lived above thier means, after time those items are sold or pawned and they are forced to leave their home..

I am not sure how many of you live in a city, but bad things are gonna happen inside these city's soon.....once the summer heat hits it will boil over in some city's....I guess you can do one of two things, ask more of your goverment to get the country back on track,or print up more flyers and pass them out telling everyone how much work is available in Jackson hole...

I do agree some do live wastefully and above thier means....but the ones who are suffering have either been forced to simplifie and it still got to be bad with no money to pay even the simple bills or they moved on tring to make it in another city with similar problems....Do many of you buy your beef from a store,? or get your veggies from a garden or do you buy them from a store.....Do you recieve any tax breaks from the goverment?..How many of you work in town to make ends meet...and if those jobs were gone, would you lose your ranch? hard work ethic is a respectable thing, its just not always enough..

Okay you've worn the 1 bedroom walk up in Jackson Hole thing out, and yes we would move if finances dictated it, my almost 7 year old has lived in 6 houses in 2 different states, and every move we've made has been for the better. When I did work 3 jobs, I also drove 30 miles one way to get to those 3 jobs, so compare that cost to riding a bus in from the suburbs. I agree with Aplus... surely there's something in BC that needs to be fixed instead of worrying about whats going on down here all the time

What you think, and what I think are the truth, are so far apart its laughable, I have no idea whats going on in BC, which is why I don't open my mouth about it. I do however know what its like to not to have any money, and to work my butt off in whatever job I can find to make ends meet. I alos know what its like to live in Canada and the States .... do you?

NN,unfortunatly your trying to make this into a Urban VS Rural debate....you can't hold water with that debate on a ranchers site. And although your saying BC's economy is great,I beg to differ that our Canadian economy is any different then the US's. I was told the other day your provinces gas prices are very high. A young man I know was just in your neck of the woods{Surrey, horse farrier} said the prices in BC are outragious.Bragging about how great BC's economy is,when two yrs ago when I was in Victoria there was a large amount of homeless people downtown. In one hand you complain about people without, then brag about the Olympics and how good your economy is.

Many of us may eat our own beef but we process it in town at a pretty high cost.Tax breaks :???: Everywhere we go,we have to drive...gas costs are a huge expence!!!I believe theres a lot of families working off the place because in reality, ranching isn't a million dollar business. Its a lifestyle we struggle to keep alive.

Well Mrs Greg as any city Vancouver is expensive, your friend is maybe just not used to the cost of living in BC.....yes our gas prices are high...I can tell you that many bussinesses can not find employess to work ...I am not bragging I even said we were really lucky to be where we are at.All I was doing was answering a question or implication that there was problems in B.C....Also I am not bragging about the Olympics ,but due to them we are enjoying a economic growth spurt similar to that of the Calgary olympics..

My point was not rural against urban...I understand the pinch of economic misfourtune hits all across the board...I believe working off the land is sometimes a needed reality...I will stop posting on this thread now....I feel I have been misunderstood and the more I say the deeper it gets...Your points are valid and respected..So Mrs Greg and Yanuck enjoy your nights and keep smiling

one thing , most the labor in Jackson Hole lives in Star Valley and either drive the Jackson 500 up the canyon each way or ride the bus from Alpine or Etna.
The other part of the labor lives in Teton County Idaho and they drive the pass, don't know if there is a bus for them. A jackson hole developer is building a development in Alpine to house most of Jackson Mexican work force and the bus system is all set up for them.

Junk iron and things like old barbed wire are going for ten cents a pound. They probably don't buy it from underpriveledged people.

Edit: LOL it is a good thing scrap wasn't going for that price back when I was hungry.

Now you're just being a smartarse.

There a lot of ' extra' jobs that were available last year or so ...but now people will do them themselves instead of hiring someone to do them.

The " extra' job idea will be a hard thing to find....the trick will be keeping the ONE job you have as companies etc cut back themselves.

I think the point is selling a keep sake from your grandma for $6.00, give me a break. If something really meant that much to you, you would find a way to make $6.00 another way. I think I would have sold my blood before selling my grandmothers keep sake for $6.00. I think even you know how silly that is?

Probably just a bunch of made up crap!

Have rented houses a couple times to people from both coasts that were having a tough time making it. As they bitched and bellyached, it was like they didn't even notice their hundreds of dvd's and cd's, electronics, designer clothes, fashion "accessories", dogs that had vet bills of thousands of dollars that should have been put down, everyone in the family wearing braces...including mom and dad....that never prepared themselves for even a slightly rainy day. I could go on and on. Government makes unwise decisions, always has, always will, but there's always going to be downturns in the free market economy as well as incredible opportunity. When I was a youngster there were scores of cattle producers, and their kids, that rodeo'd hard and some lost everything they owned....yet it was never their fault. Same situation.
