AMI Files Comments Objecting to Montana Country of Origin Labeling Act
American Meat Institute
December 06, 2006
The American Meat Institute (AMI) and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) today submitted comments opposing the implementation of Montana’s Country of Origin Placarding Act. The associations stated in their comments that the provisions in the law, and its attendant proposed regulations, that mandate country of origin labeling through placarding represent an unconstitutional exercise of power in violation of multiple provisions of the United States Constitution, including the Supremacy Clause and the Commerce Clause.
Because the state law and proposed regulations are unconstitutional AMI and FMI requested that the Montana Department of Labor and Industry withdraw the proposed regulation. To review the comments in their entirety, go to http://www.meatami.com/StoryLinks/2006/montanacolcomments120606.pdf.
