The pictures were taken around the Medicine Hat, Alberta area after a windstorm. The bales weigh up to approximately 1600lbs and some were reported to have rolled up to 5 miles.

you would think if the wind is strong enough to move hay like that, it would be hard for anything else to stay put

Thats crazy.  I am glad we don't get wind like that are our barn would be roll flat. I would like to know how much wind dose it take to blow a bale. Then I would get a big fan and blow my bales to one side of the field.

I new way of putting up hay. :D

so how many mph does it take to roll a 1600# round bale 5 miles :???: :?
My guess is a lot more than we will ever see on earth. Don't believe this story for a minute. Seen that effect quite often though when baling on steep ground. We worked land in Scotland that we unloaded all the bales that way - pick them up on the flat at the bottom. Good story and pictures though.

I'm not saying that these pictures are right or wrong, but Medicine Hat has no steep ground... or any hills to speak of. Its pretty flat there.

I googled earth, and sure nuff south south east of medicine hat, there's some kinda small range of ruff lookin hills. I was sent these photos and that's the info that came with them. I'm not swearin that they are from that area. But it really doesn't matter where it's at....wind that'll move hay bales is not somethin ya see ever day LOL

last summer the wind got so strong it wrecked over 50 pivots in and around Bow Island ,there wasn't a twister to be found , I think it's quite possible that the wind could do that , it isn't that hard to move a round bale buy hand.

OK, I'll challenge anyone (1 person) to move a 1600lb bale by hand on reasonably flat ground.

When our oldest boy was 13-14 years old he made a lot of money betting 10 bucks that he could roll big bales 20 feet by himself. This was in swamp meadows/soft ground. The trick is they have to be solid and fairly fresh out of the baler.

I can't move a grain bin or tear a roof off with my bare hands but the wind can. :???:
