Ane We Can't ID Cattle?

BEIJING (Reuters) - As if China didn't have its hands full keeping tabs on its 1.3 billion people, the country will now begin tracking its vegetables.

In an attempt to ensure food safety during the 2008 Olympics, Beijing is to give every cabbage, carrot and pea pod its own identity number and file, the Beijing News reported on Wednesday.

If there is a "safety incident" the vegetable's file can be immediately checked and its origins traced, the newspaper said, in a report accompanied by graphics showing personnel at computers tracking each vegetable's path from farm to plate.

"Safety incidents" was a likely reference to pesticide or pollutants in the soil. The environment group Greenpeace has found banned pesticides and excessive levels of other chemicals in vegetables supplied from China.

"After going through inspections at the distribution center, standard and qualified vegetables can enter Olympic kitchens," the Beijing News report said.

The city will need more than 5,000 tonnes of vegetables during the Olympics, mostly from Beijing and the northern Chinese provinces of Hebei and Shandong.

The report made no mention of fruit.

We CAN do it, Mike, it is just that some people are afraid to.

Some aren't all that proud of their cattle.

Some don't have the facilities, or don't want to go to the bother.

Some believe it is a precursor to "the mark of the beast" for humans, so refuse to do it.

Some think their brand is all that is needed.

But some people do ID their cattle and getting paid for it when they sell their product, whether as cattle or beef.

However, without some sort of inspection and rules, how are we to know if the guy who tells the consumer he raised that steak really did so?????

Why do you support inspection and rules against producers but not packers, MRJ?

Why the bias?

Have you read the OIG GIPSA report or have you just turned another blind eye when it comes to producers vs. livestock dealers/packers?

Why the double standard here, MRJ?

Why are you so against producers?

as long as we keep it private data and secure data. Both of which the USDA has shown an inability to do.

They can't even get market data reported correctly, BMR, why trust them with this?

The USDA is being used for the benefit of a few choice clients who are paying off politicians.
