ANGUS beef came first, second and third in a beef tasting exercise by a panel of eight culinary judges for the Epicure section of The Age newspaper.

The aim was to identify differences between grassfed and grainfed beef.

Nine porterhouse steaks, four grassfed and five grainfed, were cooked by Ian Curley, executive chef of Melbourne’s European and City Wine Shop.

The samples, which ranged from supermarket bargains to top-end restaurant product, were each cooked medium rare with only a touch of salt.

Age food writer, Richard Cornish, reported the tasting panel of impartial meat eaters were only told they were there to taste beef and were given no further information and were asked to make tasting notes and to pick their first, second and third preferences.

“The result was an unequivocal win for the grainfed product,” Mr Cornish said.

The winning Angus products include the widely available Certified Australian Angus Beef that utilizes close to 100,000 steers a year and can be found in selected Woolworths stores in Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Western Australia, in selected Coles outlets in NSW as well as in about 100 high quality retail butcher shops plus many leading hotels and restaurants throughout the nation.

The other two Angus products to feature in the awards are the boutique brands, Hopkins River Beef and Coorong Angus Beef aimed at niche markets.
