Here is a flyer the AAA has put out for angus breeders or those using angus genetics....Glad to see they are proactive trying to find if this is genetic, enviromental, viral, etc...

Sounds like this is tracing back to GAR Precision 1680 bloodlines...

Luckily I've never had anything to do with Precision bloodlines- but this could be big for the industry- and make some mighty pricey cattle "canner priced" overnight...
Hopefully they can get the DNA test developed quickly and test which offspring are carriers of the gene...

Has the red angus folks said anything to the red breeders :???: As I understand it Precision has been allowed used in the red angus registry too...

This is just a shortlist of Precision 1680 cattle I came up with off one site- altho few or none of these may be carriers- and it would still take the right combination to have a problem... Won't know until the test is available...

Their was some talk about it at the Red Angus Convention this week in Cheyenne.

But remember, just because "1680" may have it, does not mean all of his offspring does. I think everyone needs to be aware of it and all genetic defects, but just breed away from them. Don't line breed as this is how they show up.

I only wish everyone would get half as excited about feet, udder, and fleshing ability as they do about these freak cases. If they did, the cattle industry would be way better off.

BRG, actually linebreeding would have been the perfect thing. The problem would have shown up years and years ago before the bull became heavily used and saved many people from the problem today.

What kind of dumb butt response is this? Let's just keep it (the genetic defect) in the woodpile but as long as the two recessive genes don't match-up we are OK?

You are supposed to be a breeder? My God, this has to be the dumbest thing posted on this site all year.

Let's don't fix a problem, just hide it through out crossing, yeah, that's the ticket!

Whew! Glad you are here to grace us with your breeding genius.

I'll never buy a bull from you or through anyone's sale you are associated with based on this pitiful statement.

You should be ashamed.

Well Put. These kind of responses are what causes distrust in seed stock producers. Now this may shed some light as to why no majoir genetic defects in the Angus breed have been reported in 25 years.[/list]

Holy cow. I guess I stated that one wrong. I didn't mean we should hide it, that is the last thing we should do, in fact we are currently working with a breeder trying to figure out if he has a problem by breeding relatives since it is the only way to find the defect. I only meant that their are defects out there and and by breeding sons to daughters, these type of problem arrive. The commercial industry didn't have a big problem before the seedstock industry started chasing this carcass fad, and now the industry has pedigrees on top of each other. When it works it is called Line breeding, and when it doesn't, it is called In-breeding. The national offices are trying to teach all of us to breed away from the problem.

If the bull hadn't of worked so well for the traits that he's known for then his genetics woudn't have been proliferated and the defect would not have been discovered. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess. 8)

Heres how ABS Global is handling it:

and gives a list of those in their fall Directory that have Precision 1680 in their 4 generation pedigree:
