Mayor Nagin in New Orleans last week convicted on 21 counts of corruption and now the mayor of Trenton, New Jersey. Many have gone down like this.

What causes this? Is it just racism?

TRENTON — Mayor Tony Mack was convicted of all six federal corruption charges today in U.S. court. His brother, Ralphiel Mack, was convicted of three of the six bribery and extortion charges both were tried for.

The unanimous verdict came in at 5:30 p.m., following a full day of deliberations in which the jury sent out three questions for U.S. Michael A. Shipp.

Tears glistened in Mack’s eyes after the verdicts were announced. But he and his brother maintained their composure while their defense lawyers questioned the jury decisions and criticized the government for setting up the sting that brought them down.

Jurors did not leave the federal courthouse by public doorway, preventing reporters from questioning them about the deliberations.

Aternate juror Sherry Jackson, who had been the only African American on the jury panel of 16, burst into tears on leaving the courtroom. She wouldn’t say why she was crying so hard, as other alternates tried to comfort her.

By law, Mack lost the mayor’s post the moment he was convicted. City Council President George Muschal, the councilman for the South Ward, was expected to be sworn as mayor as soon as the proper paperwork was in put in order.

Convicted Mayor Tony Mack regains security detail from city police, reports to work

TRENTON — Police are back protecting the capital city’s most notorious felon.

Several sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Trentonian Tuesday convicted Mayor Tony F. Mack is again being driven around by city police Detective Gairy Robinson.

Last week, Robinson was reassigned to another post within the department shortly after Mack was convicted of six counts of corruption.

The mayor apparently took issue with the maneuver and had the decision reversed, sources said.

Business Administrator Sam Hutchinson said following Tuesday’s council meeting that the matter was “under review.”

Council President George Muschal, who is a former city cop of 40 years, takes issue with police driving Mack around.

“I think the taxpayers are paying enough,” he said. “To pay for security to drive around a convicted felon is totally outrageous.”

City officials also said that Mack reported to work on Tuesday at City Hall. It was his first appearance since his conviction.

On Feb. 7, Mack was convicted of six counts of extortion, bribery, and mail and wire fraud for accepting bribes to build a downtown parking garage on city-owned property as part of an FBI sting operation. The mayor’s brother Ralphiel was also convicted of three counts of extortion and bribery in the scheme.

The mayor has been allowed to stay in office since his conviction due to a loophole in state law and his refusal to resign.

If Mack was guilty of a state corruption charge, he would have been removed from office immediately. But because it was a federal conviction, state law requires forfeiture paperwork to be filed for removal if an official doesn’t resign.

Mack’s shenanigans to stay in power has garnered attention from various national media outlets.

But his moment in the sun might be shortly lived. Last week, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office filed paperwork to remove Mack as mayor, strip his pension, and disqualify him from serving in public office ever again.

Mack, a Democrat, faced a recall election after a controversial first year in office:
"Mack's critics say he has used the city's payroll like a personal piggy bank, hiring unqualified friends for key posts and focusing on minor projects like parks and parades as the city struggles with serious problems," according to The Times (Trenton).

This first year of his administration also saw an unusually-large procession of business administrators.[1] The first resigned after a month, saying the mayor didn't believe in "good government." Another resigned just ahead of pleading guilty to embezzlement while employed in another, previous position.

His housing director quit after a prior theft conviction was revealed. His chief of staff was arrested trying to buy heroin.[12] His half-brother, whose authority he elevated at the city water plant, was arrested on charges of stealing.[12] Subsequently, his law director resigned after arguing with Mack over complying with open-records laws and potential violations of laws prohibiting the awarding of city contracts to large campaign donors.[13]

not sure what all the fuss is about,.. Mack is just being a good ol boy democrat..
