Another Brain Exercise

So the peasant lad wants to marry the King's daughter and asks for her hand in marriage. The King feels the need to appear to be a fair and open-minded ruler, but shudders at the thought of his little princess joining hands with a lowly commoner.

He decides to address the matter in a public manner so that all who see it will know what a fair man he is. The King will write "Yes" on one slip of paper, and "No" on another and place them both in a hat.

He sets a date for the shire to meet at the palace entrance, at which time the young man will draw his answer from the hat in full view of all the people. All present will see that all is done openly and fairly.

On his way to meet his fate, the peasant learns that the King has written "NO" on both pieces of paper. When he arrives at the gates, he carries out an act that guarantees him the hand of the princess.

What did he do?

If you already know the answer, make the rest exercise their brains for a while before you tell them.

The peasant lad reaches into the hat in front of all the crowd and draws out one of the pieces of paper. He tears it into shreds and lets them drift away on the wind.

He then asks the King take the other slip of paper and read what it says to the crowd .

If the King does not want his trickery exposed, he must read out the "NO", and the people will think that the young man drew the one that says "YES"!

The King was outwitted by the peasant.

A very good lesson, really, in persisting when there does not seem to be a way to accomplish your honourable goals.

Or, the lad draws out both pieces of paper and shows the king has lied,
the peasants revolt, slay the bad king and crown the lad as monarch.

Just shows, its not nice to do No-No's.
