It's too cold and wet for this old girl to go outside so I'm sitting by the fire entertaining myself by writing down a couple stories before I forget the pertinent details.
Since some of you know one of our Harding County characters, Coon Dog, I thought I'd share one of the stories with you:
We don’t know where Coon Dog got the big black bear, but when he was in high school he brought a full-grown black bear home and kept it chained out in his mother’s yard in Buffalo.
Coon Dog and Ivan liked to go down to the 3.2 bar and bend their elbows a few times after school was over for the day. When they would wend their way home after the bar closed, Ivan liked to stop and pick a fight with the bear.
Ivan knew exactly how long the chain was and where he needed to stand so the bear couldn’t reach him while he taunted the furious bruin. Coon Dog got sick of Ivan’s nightly ritual and when he couldn’t talk him into just coming in and going to bed he decided to even things up a little.
Dawg made a little trip to the hardware store, bought four more feet of chain and extended the bear’s tether early the next morning. That night after school, the dynamic duo again visited the local watering hole and when Ivan was sufficiently lubricated, Coon Dog steered him toward home.
Again, Ivan staggered up to the bear, looked for his safe spot on the ground, growled menacing at the bear and challenged old Smoky to a fight… and got more than he planned on.
The bear came to where the chain used to end, leaped forward the extra four feet, grabbed Ivan with both paws, wrapped him in a snug bear hug and took him to the ground. Ivan was straining with all his might to hold open the bear’s jaws when Coon Dog left them to turn in.
It was pretty late before Ivan finally got free from that the bear and came to bed. And he kind of lost interest in tormenting the bear after that.
I realize most of you don’t know either Coon Dog or Ivan, but Ivan is one of the biggest and toughest steer wrestlers I know. The bear is lucky to be alive!!
Tap and koj can probably tell us more about this story. I just heard it second hand after listening to a couple of my sons, a couple of Coon Dog’s brothers and a couple of Ivan’s brothers laugh about it.
