Another Crisis, Another Solution:National ID

I'll get mine when the President gets his!

JERUSALEM – Following the 9/11 attacks, President Obama's nominee for a top intelligence post advocated that to effectively combat terrorism, the U.S. government should implement a national identity system, "so we better know who is who."

In testimony before the 9/11 commission, Charles "Chas" Freeman, the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War, also recommended conducting the war on terrorism primary as a law enforcement effort.

Freeman is slated to head the U.S. National Intelligence Council, or NIC, a crucial component of the U.S. intelligence apparatus. The NIC serves as the center for midterm and long-term strategic thinking within the American intelligence community. It provides intelligence briefs for Obama and key U.S. agencies and produces reports that help determine American policy on crucial issues, such as Iran's nuclear program.

The declassified portions of Freeman's statements before the 9/11 commission were partially rehashed this week by Jerusalem-based researcher Ashley Rindsberg, a blogger for the Huffington Post website.

(Story continues below)

Freeman gave the commission three recommendations for better fighting Islamic terrorism:

* "First, the U.S. government should improve the visa system. More names to the forms should be added in order to distinguish among the many 'Abdullah bin Mohammads.' Technical means should also be used to cut the wait."

* "Second, the United States should implement a national identity system, so we better know who is who."

* Third, the war on terrorism should be seen primarily as a law enforcement and intelligence war, not as a military one."

Freeman has recently come under fire for his documented ties to foreign governments, including receiving funds from the Saudi government and his service on the advisory board of a Chinese-government-owned oil company widely seen as conducting business deals meant to expand the communist nation's influence worldwide. One of the Chinese company's recent attempts to purchase a large U.S. oil firm drew bipartisan congressional opposition amid fears the deal would harm American national security interests. Violating U.S. sanctions?

Since 2004, Freeman has been on the international advisory board of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, or CNOOC.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 is U.S. federal law which imposes certain security, authentication and issuance procedures standards for the state driver's licenses and state ID cards, in order for them to be accepted by the federal government for "official purposes", as defined by the Secretary of Homeland Security. Currently, the Secretary of Homeland Security has defined "official purposes" as presenting state driver's licenses and identification cards for boarding commercially operated airline flights, entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants. The Act is a rider to an act of the United States Congress titled Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005.

Did you complain when Bush mandated the ID system :???:

I think the Democrats also complained about this type of stereotyping and racial profiling. Did those democrats all disappear, or will they speak out against this guy?

Does this guy believe that just because you have a middle name that is Muslim, you are a Terrorist?

I did not. I feel as if all 50 states should be required to make ID's be on the same page with every other state.

If it stops one terrorist, it's worth it......
For their part, proponents of the Real ID Act say it's designed to implement proposals suggested by the 9/11 Commission, which noted that some of the hijackers on September 11, 2001, had fraudulently obtained state driver's licenses. But not all did: at least one hijacker simply showed his foreign passport and walked onto the airplane that day.

And the sad thing is nothing has changed. When issues of how easy it is to fraudulently obtain American Identification are brought up, you are called a Kook!

Yep- and our state legislature even passed a law against it-as a violation of states rights and unfunded mandate- but the Homeland Security folks started putting pressure on- saying that those folks without them wouldn't be allowed on airplanes or across the border- and I think the Gov compromised..Didn't need to change over immediately- but all the new issues and renewals on Drivers Licenses have to meet the Feds Specs....

My understanding was these Real ID's were also being mandated in Canada and Mexico- and were seen by many civil rights groups, constitutionalists and conservatives as one more piece of evidence pointing to Bush's drive to make a North American Union....
Which the rightwing conservatives and John Birchers believed would involve bankrupting the country- so they could/would have to develop a new North American currency-- the Amero.... :???:
