The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office arrested McPherson on Jan. 2 on charges of domestic violence and neglect and abuse of a disabled adult. She is suspected of beating Carver Foster Ray, 72, of Spanish Fort.

Signs that Ray was being abused were discovered in January after he was taken to the emergency room at Thomas Hospital.

Ray was deprived of food and water for three days and was beaten with an extension cord on "numerous occasions," according to arrest affidavits.

The attacks with the extension cord resulted in Ray having more than 50 scrapes, marks, lacerations and cuts on his body from his waist down, the affidavits state.

"We... feel like given his age this was obviously an act of violence and that she was taking advantage of his inability to defend himself," Gober said.

The Sheriff's Office said McPherson and Ray lived together on Patrick Lane, and McPherson was responsible for Ray's care.

A friend of mine in his 70's was assaulted in colorado.

Turns out colorado has a 'person at risk' law, in which in which it's recognized that an older or younger person is less able to defend themselves---and the penaltys can be much greater.

Some laws do make sense.
