Independent Cattlemen of Iowa

Newest Affiliate Organization

(Billings, Mont.) – R-CALF USA is pleased to announce the affiliation of the newly created organization, Independent Cattlemen of Iowa (ICI). ICI is a grassroots cattle-producer organization dedicated to serving the needs and interests of independent cattle producers in the Hawkeye State, while joining forces with R-CALF USA for national representation. ICI’s board of directors consists of both cow/calf producers and feedlot operators from across the state.

“The reason we created ICI was because many independent Iowa cattle producers have watched in horror as the swine industry here has become vertically integrated, and we don’t want that to happen to us,” said ICI President Eric Nelson, of Moville, Iowa, who also serves as R-CALF USA Region VII Director. “Cattle producers here wanted a state organization that supports R-CALF USA’s focus on independent producers – not the large integrators and meatpackers.

“Independent Cattlemen of Iowa supports voluntary Animal ID, Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (M-COOL), open and competitive markets and price discovery, local rural economic development through cattle production, as well as environmental laws that not only protect the environment, but also allow cattle producers future production opportunities,” Nelson continued.

“R-CALF is looking forward to working with our newest affiliate,” said R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard. “Iowa is a very important cattle-producing state, particularly now, with the opportunities to re-establish cattle feeding in Iowa because of all the ethanol production in that state.”

For more information, call Nelson at (712) 873-3108. Soon, the organization will launch a website: www.IndependentCattlemenofIowa.com.
