Why keep yapping about how " bad" the UN is...why not shut up and try to get in there and make it better? If we don't/can't or don't want to...no one else will give it much credit either!

It's there...make it work for us!

I meant, what you libs wanted to do with the UN............Stay the course, or cut and run

So what do we do with the UN(keeping this in mind)
Not that I love the UN or think they have done a great job in the Middle East for instance, but they're what we have to work with and improve versus ignore them or start over.

1 Cut and Run
2 Stay the course

Bush has a policy of appointing people to run an agency they hate. The Sec of Education is a staunch supporter of school vouchers. When a Dept of Ed report showed virtually no difference in tests on private schools kids and public school kids, she didn't even bother to read it. In fact, she was caught looking pretty stupid by a reporter who had read the report and had some questions. But that didn't stop her from claiming vouchers for private schools will create better educated kids.

I hear soon-to-be former Senator Lincoln Chaffee may be Bolton's replacement. It's hard to believe. He seems to be a competent guy. I can't imagine Bush would appoint him to anything.

Must be a region thing because around here if you want to give a negative connotation to things the word ilk is used. Granted that is not the true meaning of ilk, however it has taken on new meaning in many cases.

Econ we will try to help you through those long words since you are worried about them. So sorry, we want to HELP you

Look PT and others of your ilk, there's a spectrum from

1- appeasement which is what Europe was doing with Arabs/Palestinians for the past decade (surprising given that appeasement of the Nazis didn't work)

2 - diplomacy and attempts to cooperate internationally

3 - coordinated international actions as in the former Yugoslavia when diplomacy will not work

4 - invasion all on our own and thumbing our nose at the world

More than that, as my gentleman caller explains, there is Bush who does not explain WHY and WHAT he's doing and Blair who comes across as a caring, intelligent, informed man who up until recently was trusted by his countryman. Blair explains when challenged. Bush does not and hence the enormous loss of goodwill and percentage points in the polls and eventually the loss of majority in the Congress.

My point is you do us "liberals" a disservice to assume we're appeasement types like the French were. I was never an appeasement type. Before you heard of the Middle East, I criticized Europe for appeasement and anti-Israel / anti-Semitic behavior. Ditto the UN.

As I see it the problem with the UN is that we have to little power in it. Simple put our enemys out number us in the UN. Even when everybody can agree on something the UN is to slow to act.
Plus remember Korea? We had to let the UN know before hand about any major offensives. Somehow word always got back to the North Koreans in time for them to prepare.
NATA in my oppinion has merit. However right now in Afghanistan NATO is really being tested. Some NATO nations seem to be under the impression that actual fighting is optional.
Anyway just a thought. You know when all your friends"allies" tell you NOT to do something. Its probable good advice.

What do you think Bolton was trying to do? He was trying to do his best to fix what he could fix, wasn't he? We need somebody that will look out for our interests. You libs just want somebody that will go in there and kiss Kofi Annan's crooked black ass.

connotation is a regular word with me which is probably because I studied linguistics. There are words I use to be erudite (like this one), but connotation I consider a regular joe's type of vocabulary item.

denotation (what it means exactly)
connotation (what it evokes, connotes)

Connotation can evoke a reaction of the inner essence of what one thinks. Denotation does not allow as much reaction. Connotation usually teases out the mood or the subjectivity, which is why I like it. It also brings about a bit of an argument too. Another reason I like it.
