U.S. Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) said today he will retire from Congress at the end of the year, bringing to a close a 14-year stint in the House of Representatives during which he rose rapidly through the ranks of Republican leadership and championed such issues as D.C. voting rights and a vibrant defense-contracting industry.

"It's time for me to take a sabbatical," Davis said. "I would say I'm not ruling out future public service, but it's time to be refreshed, to see what it's like in the private sector. That doesn't mean I will or won't come back."

Davis' departure could be another pickup for the Dems- as the state has been leaning more and more Democrat...There is also talk that Virginia Senator Jim Webb could be the anointed Democratic pick for V.P....Webb who is a recipient of a silver star, 2 bronze stars, and 2 purple hearts in Vietnam, served as president Reagans Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs from 1984 to 1987 and then as Secretary of the Navy from 1987 to 1988.....

It is thought his nomination can counter any arguments of the Dems not being pro military or able to handle national defense.....

Interesting on Webb. He might be the person to offset any Obama weaknesses on a ticket. Webb's not afraid to speak his mind to anyone willing to listen. When President Bush asked him how his son was doing in Iraq, Webb told him it was none of his business or words to that effect.
