The sole surviving Somali pirate from the U.S hostage-taking drama makes a federal court appearance today in New York.

Instead of handing him over to Kenyan authorities, the U.S. decided to bring Abduhl Wali-i-Musi to New York.

He smiled for photographers and reporters as federal agents led him into custody. He said nothing.

other then publicity for Obama,.. is there one good reason not to let this "child" rot in a Kenyan prison for a few years instead,..

BTW(he is only 16), his mother is seeking to come to the US to be with her son..

Is he smiling because he is going to get to see bo?

He's smiling cause his life just got better by 120%.

He's got a warm & dry place to sleep and shite, 3 meals a day, fresh clean clothes to wear ( stripes make him look taller I suppose).

I'm not sure keeping him here is a good idea cause word will get back that jail here is better than daily life in Somalia, and they'll all want to get caught.

Did you hear the mommy appealed to Obama on behalf of her poor innocent teenager who was taken advantage of by bad men and turned him into a pirate. She even wants Obama to bring her to the US so she can be with her son while he stands trial. Want to bet she will also ask to stay if he is confined in a US prison?

She will automatically be threatened with death, for speaking out against the "bad men", they are governed under Sharia law now.

She might be eligible for asylum though! We need to send them more aid so this does not happen anymore. The pirates are only breaking the law because they need to provide the basic essentials of life.

The Americans and French are at fault for starting this, and they will pay for their sins!

Somalia: “Ransom Used To Drill Water Wells, Fund Hospitals” Says Pirates

Posted By Rooble On April 18, 2009 @ 7:08 am In Africa | 3 Comments

Mogadishu, 18 April 2009 (somalilandpress) - Somali pirate groups have reiterated their threat to respond to activities carried out in Somali waters by French and American warships. About 11 Somali pirates arrested by the French will be taken to a Kenyan court. The spokesman of the Somali pirate groups, Sugule Ali who gave an interview to Somalilandpress, said they are planning to defend themselves from foreign warships carrying out operations in order to fight pirates who became famous for the hijacking ships off Somalia.

Ali threatened that they will take a serious step, and will target French and American warships. He expressed sadness following the killing of three pirates by US forces during the rescue operation of Richard Phillips who was the captain of a Danish-owned ship.

[Ali] To legalize the killing of people or plunder them is a dream, it is only God who can do something to us, human beings cannot do anything to us and we will defend ourselves God willing. The French will get what they planted, they will get what they want.

Somalilandpress: So you are still threatening the French government?

[Ali] We are forced to and we will carryout serious steps against them which they will not like. We will also respond to the Americans in the same way they had responded [by killing three pirates during the rescue operation of Capt Richard Phillips].

Somalilandpress: What do you do with the ransom money paid by foreign ships ?

[Ali] The money received from ships as ransom: first, there is no functional government in Somalia to restore security. You could possibly know something about this already [about what pirates do with ransom money], we fund projects, we use the funds to protect our waters, we give part of [the money] to the [local authorities] in areas we live in order to set up militias to ensure security, we drill water wells. We also pay a lot of money to health institutions, we do very many things [with the money]. You should be aware of this and you could carryout your own research on what we do or planning to do.

Ali also said they have proofs that foreign ship [illegally] take away the country’s resources

I watched a movie yesterday called "slum dog millionare"..It opened my eyes to the fact that Life in many other countries does has a price,They are more interested in money then life itself..We often hear the phrase "life is priceless".Well there it has a price and not a very high price either....These Pirates know no other life,Its living for them ...It is wrong In the eyes of the west to steal and rob but in these other countries its a lifestyle held by almost all...Killing ,jailing or even killing their family members wont stop them.....more will just show up....I have no answer on how to stop it...I think maybe there could be patroled shipping lanes so it is easy to spot and take out these Pirates, but I have no clue how advantagess that is for the merchant carries.....

These countries just do not live as we do...They will never adopt the lifestyle of the west. How to deal with it and them,I just do not know nor could I even offer a partial solution.....You can kill them but it wont stop them ...How do you deal with that?.....

I'm glad you see this now. About 10 yrs ago I was working on an Archaeo dig in Egypt. We went to many sites, one was located in a remote section of Southern Egypt.

We had armed guards with us, provided by the Army & Pres M., but since there were several "white-American females " , 2 others plus me, we were a MAJOR target for kidnapping.

<< I know many of you here wish they'd been successful  >>

But it was a REAL threat due to the conditions in Sudan and the border areas.

Honestly, many of dogs and cats live better lives than a majority of the people in the world, now those reasons vary greatly be it cultural, their goverment, or climate situation.

Bravo - I live it - it is like this somewhere on all continents. Even our own as we import the "tribe before flag mentality" - people do not believe me as they do not want to believe it

These countries just do not live as we do...They will never adopt the lifestyle of the west. How to deal with it and them,I just do not know nor could I even offer a partial solution.....You can kill them but it wont stop them ...How do you deal with that?.....

Refuse them admittance would be a big start - deport those who are here and causing the trouble- would also be a good addition. I can think of other solutions but this is not the forum.

Media and human rights groups do not agree.

This kid will quite likely end up staying - or go home a hero.

If he stays Mom will come over along with extended family. Compliments of the U.S. people.

If he goes home he will go home to a life as a story teller and person who may have failed at the pirate job but beat the Americans at their own game - trust me - it will be a nicely spun story - maybe a book and a movie?

How many folks and groups are lining up to save this misguided soul and his poverty stricken family?

having been to many countries that have "slums" and such,.. the poverty is often the same.. reservation towns like Cherry Creek, or Mexican cities such as Tijuana are lavish / posh in comparison.. but that is not the topic... . (sorry, since I've only been to nice clean cities, and towns in Canada, I don't have local comparison for you)

but the show trial "money" and "costs" could be spent actually doing something about the problem.. not just a legacy show trail to define Obamas' policies
