You're on a roll today.

Were you surprised about Specter? He'd said just last week that he'd never switch parties.

I don't know that much about him except he's a pragmatist and survivor.

Yep. Lots of Dems aren't too happy about the situation. He'll likely be a Joe Liberman kind of Democrat/Independent. Toomey was polling way ahead of Spector, but it was doubtful he could win the General election, especially against a well known Dem. So it's not an especially good deal for the Democratic Party for Spector to switch. But as of right now, he holds a Republican seat on several Committees. He won't automatically lose those seats by switching parties.

Specter: Who are the Voters to Judge ME?

By: Hank
1:45 PM - Link this post

Senator Arlen Specter (PA), who switched from the Republican to Democrat party on Tuesday (April 28), admitted that he did so due to an unwillingness to let voters decide his fate.

“I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate,” he said in the statement.

“I don’t have to say anything to them. They’ve said it to me,” Specter said.

Liar. The statement clearly says he refuses to have the REPUBLICAN primary electorate judge his record. Not "voters". Democrats and Independents like Specter. He'll still have to face the voters, maybe in a Democratic primary, but at least in the General Election. Hopefully, he'll lose the primary and we can get a better Dem in that seat. But right now, I'm very happy. :D
