I refuse to participate in another one of those winters. What do you think the odds of back to back worst winter ever is? We are trying to prepare for it but our resources (spare feed pile) were diminished and this years replenishment is less than stellar. When we are done putting up feed and can assess the banked grass and swathgrazing we will destock to meet the resources. Do not want to see that winter again.

Well- an El Nino has developed in the Pacific-and appears to be strengthening---which historically usually means a warmer winter across North America- especially in the Central Plains...

So far that is what the long run forecast is predicting- with much above average chances for a warmer than normal winter in Montana and the Dakotas...Dry Pacific northwest- and wet for the south- especially Texas...
And it historically/statistically usually means a less severe hurricane season for folks on the east coast and gulf....

I predict a mild winter, as we had the tougher one last year. Although the last time we put up this much feed, it was the summer of 1996 and we all know how that one turned out.

No rule that we can't have another bad one. I didn't think we had it as bad last year as other people, I thought it was probably about a normal winter as we have had several good ones in a row. I don't know what is going to happen this year but one of these years we are going to have a couple in a row.

And historically/statistically while El Nino usually means a less severe hurricane season for folks on the east coast and gulf- it also can mean more of those that do show up hit the northeast of the US (Bill :???: ) ....

But it often means hot and dry summers (droughts) for Australia.. :( On some of the other cattle sites- the Aussies are already reporting hotter and dryer conditions as they are nearing summer..

What a shock to see all that SNOW the first thing.
I'm going to go with OT's prediction. Just as well feel good
as bad. He's been a good forcaster for this area anyhow.

What will be, will be... :p

Time will tell. Last 2 winters have been colder and snowier than normal, while overall temps have been colder than normal. Summer 2009 will be remembered for the summer that wasn't.

It would be one huge change in weather pattern to to warmer than normal for the upcoming winter.

If this pattern keeps going on like this summer has been for us...we're gonna get lots and lots of snow...We've have more rain here in 3 months than we get in over a year! I hope this pattern breaks! Don't need to much snow!!!!

I hope the weather pattern does not continue as it has for the summer - - - -we are averaging 15 F below normal with 3 times the normal rain.

The pasture and row crops are doing well but not outstanding as they are not getting the heat units they need.

Normal is 28 90F days for the summer but so far we have only had 8 It got down into the 50s again last night so it is very comfortable for work outside - - -light jacket in the mornings and mid 70s by mid afternoon.

We have not had a real winter for about 8 to 10 years and I'm fine with that except it seems we are having more insect carry over than normal.

I predict it will come prior to December 21st and leave well after March 21st and that the days up here will be short (I am almost guaranteed to be right on this prediction).
Oh yeah, and at least 1 week of -40 highs.

Well I hope the weather boys are right- and the farmers almanac wrong...

I don't particularly like this forecast:
http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/a/frigid-2010-forecast-how-cold-will-the-winter-weather-be

Interestingly up on the creek the neighbors are replacing some corner posts and gate posts... Today I talked with them and they said they may have to round off one corner because every time they drill a hole to set a tie- it fills up with water...
The water table is that high this year :)

One of the major factors the farmers almanac uses for their prediction is sun spot activity. They are predicting a colder then average winter, National Weather Service is predicting a warmer then average winter.

We dont get winters down here. More like nice cool spells. Hell anything lower than 60 degrees is gumbo weather. We had a good snow last year, out of the ordinary for us. I like the winters wet and cold. :D

We are kinda spoiled down near the Gulf Coast aren't we?? Last year was mild for us. Snow is more of a treat. If this summer is any indication of what the coming winter will be like then were in trouble. Would love a wet winter!!
