Anybody Snowed In?

We had 3 inches of snow but it's all blowing south about 40 MPH. Dang wind is cold! Hasn't quit blowing for 4 days now and makes outside life plumb miserable. I went to flip the lead rope on a halter over my shoulder and the end came around and hit my ear! If ya find it down New Mexico way please mail me the pieces! :D I gotta bring my cows home tomorrow in this stuff. Oh joy! :D

Holy cow some of you have really gotten dumped on stay safe and warm.

They threatened us with snow and rain all week but we only got about a mm of rain. It has been very cold here today and really windy. It is supposed to be +14 celsius tomorrow. I am sooo looking forward to that . Man I hate winter, but if other areas are getting snow and we are getting nothing it does not sound good for us; it may be a long dry cold winter again. :(

any of you who would rather stay inside where it's warm, and hire somebody else to do the cow-work are free to contact me...I'm loaded up with all my gear and ready to roll in your direction at a moments notice.

I don't eat much...all I ask for is a warm place to sleep, and a modest paycheck.

It certainly is better than watching these damn motel rooms eat up my hard-earned savings from this past summer.

Unemployment and Homelessness REALLY don't go very well together...and tend to break a mans spirit down after awhile.

And these days Job Service is worth little more than tits on a bull, being managed and run mostly by elitist-yuppie 'towny-folks' who really DON'T saavy very much about life on a ranch.

If you could use my help, I could certainly use yours.

I always figured if we were going to get a drought it is always best to get it in the winter time. The only snow that does any good is the snow that we get in the fall or else the spring when it can soak in. Everything else just blows around all winter or thaws and runs down the creeks.

It's hard to tell since it has drifted, but I'm guessing over 20 inches so far. The wind is supposed to really pick up, so that will help open some ground :D . The girls are on their own since it's too dangerous to venture very far outside, especially if the wind does start blowing hard. They've got good shelter, so they should be fine.

It's a good day to stay inside and make beef stew and chocolate cake  :D .

I was getting worried about you...haven't seen you on FB today. I'll be right over for stew and cake

No worries, thanks for the concern :D ! Hurry quick, the cake won't last long. I have absolutely NO self-control around chocolate  .

no snow here, but this storm has bought lots and lots of rain to Iowa. It's been a very wet month, so much so, that Flash Flood Watches are and or were up for a large part of the state, mostly from Des Moines east.

Sun came out today- wind quit blowing- temps went up into the 40's-- and it felt like sunbathing weather...Beautiful out...

Weather boys are predicting temps in the 40's and 50's for the next couple of weeks- with little chance of moisture :)

pretty slow. Iowa's pheasant season opens this weekend and my step-dad isn't going to bother going out with all of the corn still in the fields.

http://wallacesfarmer.com/story.aspx?s=32634&c=9

The report shows 12% of Iowa's 2009 corn crop harvested as of October 25. That's 7 percentage points behind last year and 19 days behind the 5-year average. Soybean harvest in Iowa has reached 47%, 39 percentage points behind last year and 21 days behind the 5-year average.

"Wet, cold and cloudy weather this past week resulted in a continued delay in Iowa's harvesting," notes Harry Hillaker, state climatologist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture. "Several sunny, dry and warmer days are needed to make significant gains in corn and soybean harvest."

Harvest of wet and low-lying fields will be delayed into November. While some fields have been harvested, very few producers have finished harvest, much less started post-harvest field work. Continued delays could push post-harvest field work into the spring of 2010.

Moisture content of corn being harvested is estimated at 27%

The weekly survey shows nearly all of Iowa's corn crop is now mature with 12% of the corn crop harvested for grain, 7% behind last year and 19 days behind the 5-year average. Moisture content of all corn in the field is estimated at 27%, seven percentage points higher than the 5-year average

Quite discouraged to say the least. Very little work accomplished and all that snow really isn't all that far west. The weatherman promises 7 days of no moisture ahead.....I'll believe it when I see it. We still have soybeans in the field and the last moisture check on some hand shelled corn resulted in 26% moisture.
