A small first step to cleaning up the mess they've made in Iraq.

"WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a key target of Iraq war critics, is stepping down, Republican officials said on Wednesday.

Former CIA Director Robert Gates will replace him, Republican officials said.

Earlier today, a spokesman for Rumsfeld said he'd given no indication that he would step down in the wake of Democratic election gains. The spokesman said Rumsfeld would work with Congress on Iraq but added that the focus on stabilizing the country will remain the same

I was just watching the same thing....he's lost it!!

He can't even answer a question and " stay on course"

He's soooo confused someone had better shut him up and get him off stage to save a little face!

He won't even let the reports ask a question...then he goes off on a tangent and nevers answers the question.

In his defense, he's humiliated and probably didn't sleep enough or well last night. Pretty sad. Someone should have forced their way in with his handlers and cleaned things up awhile ago. But who could that have been. The Republican Party is going to deliberate and analyze this quandry and come out with quite different actions in the near future..

And I would not have put him in a press conference this morning.

He did concede a lot, especially to Pelosi.
