Jon and Kate Gosselin's divorce causes split with show; TLC halts production of 'Jon & Kate Plus 8'

After the couple's heart-wrenching admission on Monday's episode that their marriage is kaput, TLC announced it is pulling new episodes off the air until August, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.

"Following a retrospective of Jon and Kate's first 10 years \[of marriage\] on June 29, the show will be on hiatus until Aug. 3," the spokeswoman said in a statement. "During this time the family will take some time off to regroup, and then a modified schedule will be in place to support the family's transition."

The hiatus was not planned and comes at a time when recognition of the family and the series is at an all-time high because of tabloid fascination with the Gosselins' marriage.

For months, the Gosselins - the parents of twins and sextuplets - have been on the cover of celebrity magazines, which have documented alleged infidelity, updates on their relationship and even Kate spanking one of their daughters.

On Monday's episode, the couple admitted they were separating. An on-screen graphic during the hour-long episode also noted they had filed divorce papers.

"It's life, it's a roller coaster, it's the way it happens, sometimes you just fall off the tracks," Jon said as the two explained the decision. "I don't hate Kate, but I have to do what's best for me and my kids."

"I'm tired of smiling on the outside while crying on the inside," Kate said.

Both said during the episode that the series would continue, but exactly how is not known.

Kate said the couple's children would remain with her in the family home in Pennsylvania, but that she and Jon would share custody and he would go into the home to be with the children.

TLC launched the fifth season of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" on Memorial Day and drew a record 9.8 million viewers.

The revelation of the marital split is the latest chapter in a TV tale in which a seemingly normal young couple with a load of kids parlayed a small show into fame and fortune. Now, the future of that franchise is in question.

"TLC continues to support the Gosselin family and will work closely with them to determine the best way to continue to tell their story as they navigate through this difficult time," the spokeswoman said.

Aplus it was a good show to watch with the family. Just kids and parents and then they got famous and their life became their empire and it wasn't as good.

Jon actually made a comment the other night you might just approve of. He said something to the fact that what does it say about our society when it's more newsworthy what he has for lunch then about the soldiers in Iraq. I thought it was a very good point. IMHO
