The market has swung the other way.
Cows are easily $200/hd. higher than they were just a month ago.
And the condition is the best I've seen in a long time at this time of the year. A lot of cows were bordering on the slightly over-fat side. In all of the herds, too, so it's not a matter of one or two guys over feeding.
I know our cows are in the best condition I have ever had them in for February and they are maintaining it on less feed than usual. Their feed demands seemed to tail way off in mid January when the weather moderated to a very even trend with no low lows and no high highs. Not one big storm so far this winter here in South Western Ontario. But that could change overnight!!
Perfect cattle feeding weather for a change.
Anyway, there was a herd of good, clean Char cows bred limo that sold from $850 for 4 mo. bred up to $1150 for close ups.
A herd of Sim/herf x bred that were bred limo sold from $800 - $1000, mostly high 8's.
Herf's $750 - $800 with sales to $1000 for a really good pair of young cows bred 8 mo.
8 - 2nd calf Black Angus cows that brought $980 ave were probably the steal of the day. Good compact cows that were built fairly close to the ground, the kind that are getting harder to find with the movement to bigger framed females.
Anyway, it is good to see the price start to move back to a more realistic range than we saw all winter.
Easily up $200 from sales earlier this month. And none that I could see went to the butcher shop, although a few should have.
