Auction yards fight Canadian border cattle rule

Five South Dakota auction yards recently hosted fundraisers that generated more than $50,000 to support a legal battle to stop older Canadian cattle from coming into the United States.

A lawsuit was filed in federal court in Aberdeen earlier this fall by Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America, the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and nine other plaintiffs to stop the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rule opening up the border to Canadian cattle over 30 months of age.

The groups contend that the border should be kept closed to older Canadian cattle because of that country's problems with mad cow disease. Mad cow disease, known scientifically as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is believed to occur mostly in cattle older than 30 months of age. The border was opened in November.

The plaintiffs say the move increases the risk of BSE infection in the U.S. cattle herd.

The fundraisers were held at Mobridge Livestock Market, Faith Livestock Commission Company, Philip Livestock Auction, Gettysburg Livestock Exchange and Fort Pierre Livestock Auction.

Haymaker, that is really OLD news. Those outfits are the sugar daddies that have conned the 'faithful' into bellying up to donate either directly, of via deductions from their cattle sales checks by/from those auctions to support R-CALF to the tune of thousands of dollars annually since the auction markets, along with Patrick Goggins, began R-CALF as a 'producer' organization.

Rollover auction to benefit R-CALF lawsuit
Lemmon Livestock to host Jan. 9 event
By Journal staff Monday, January 07, 2008

Lemmon Livestock will hold a rollover auction at noon Jan. 9 to raise funds for the lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s rule allowing older Canadian cattle into the country.

The lawsuit has been brought by R-CALF USA, the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and nine other plaintiffs.

The intent of the lawsuit is to stop the importation from Canada of cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, according to a Stockgrowers news release.

Several members of the Stockgrowers Association plan to attend the Lemmon auction.

In a rollover auction those who wish to support the lawsuit can bid on a calf, or cow, and then donate the animal back so it can be auctioned off again and again.

More than $70,000 for the effort has been raised through various livestock auction markets in South Dakota.
