Aussie Beef Sales to Japan Remain Strong

Aussie Beef will be able to successfully compete against U.S. beef in Japan, officials predict. Sales of Aussie Beef brand beef to the Japanese market are expected to remain strong despite the announcement that U.S. beef imports would be permitted, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) declared.

In addressing the impact of Japan's decision to allow U.S. beef imports, MLA managing director David Palmer noted that demand for Australian beef in Japan had increased enormously over the last three years, reports MeatNews.

"Exports of Aussie Beef have increased over 125,000 metric tons, or 45 percent, since 2003, to a record 405,000 metric tons last year in response to keen customer interest in our product," Palmer said. "During this time our beef has gained many new, enthusiastic, customers in Japan. Both consumers and the food industry alike appreciate its high quality and the natural systems under which it is produced."

Palmer noted that the limiting conditions applying to U.S. beef imports would assist Australian beef sales to the Japan market.

"These limitations will particularly affect the U.S.'s ability to supply large volumes of single beef cuts to the Japan market, an area in which the United States previously enjoyed a significant competitive advantage," Palmer pointed out.

Palmer noted that with the re-entry of U.S. beef a challenge for all suppliers was to increase rates of beef consumption in Japan.
