Increased Beef Imports From Australia Drive Outlook For 2009

U.S. beef imports increased 10 percent in the first quarter of 2009. Australia, which typically vies with Canada to be the largest foreign source of beef in the United States, increased its exports to the United States by 42 percent. Australian producers’ exports are also being affected by the global economic slowdown. As a result, some Australian beef that went to Asian and Russian markets last year under normal economic conditions is now being redirected to the United States.

How much are we making on this deal, MRJ? How high do I need to adjust everybody's cash flow up?

Could anyone tell me how much Tyson will bid on lean, cull cows at the exact same time the ships with millions of tons of lean beef are being unloaded?

Hey Mike,

Isn't this exactly why the current push in the Senate by WY, SD, ND and IA to change PSA is like closing the barn door after the horses are gone?

If the Senate changes PSA with regard to marketing contracts, then it will just hasten the increased flow from Brazil and Australia - in my opinion.

I've got my cull cows sorted and ready to go to market as soon as the market jumps up like SH says will happen! With a 42% increase in imported trim, packers should be able to pay way more for USA cows now!!!

Don't sell them until they are good and gobby fat.

That will help to add value to your next years sales.

Isn't that right? The more fat we have the more we can add value to it?

So typical to use part of the story! What has been the past, say 3 to 5 years, history of imports?

What has the effect of the dairy buy-out been?

Maybe people paying attention did, or should have, sold their cull cows before that buy-out started. Maybe it will have more effect on our prices than the imported AUS beef.

Well, were not talking about dairy. The topic is Aussie beef and what impact it will have on cattle prices. How much do you think it will raise cattle prices here, MRJ?

Well Sandy, now that you've got those [email protected]$ed Canadians cut back with COOL, somebody with cheap enough beef to compete with the added labeling costs shows up.
Sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs lie.

Wonder how many US feedlots make money with offshore beef.

I know quite a few US feedlots that have made money feeding Canadian cattle. Would any of them possibly be customers of or in any way connected to the bank that pays your salary Sadhusker

I don't understand what point you're trying to make in hijacking this thread. Sure, some feeders make money feeding out Canadian cattle. Are we playing a game of Captain Obvious here?

How much money do you think US producers will make as a result of increased Aussie imports? $1/ head? $10? $50?

I do know there will be a heck of a lot less money in Americans pockets than when the feedlots and packers were importing Canadian feeders and fats on the pre COOL scale.

Stimulus Sandy, Stimulus. Maybe the Government will pick up where the feedlot gates are swinging in the breeze.
