Dairy herds slaughtered as drought worsens
Dairy cows are being slaughtered in their thousands every week in Victoria's major milk production areas, the Murray and Goulburn Valleys.

Most farmers have had the lowest winter rainfall on record and haven't been able to grow enough pasture to support their herds.

With fodder prices at a record high, few can afford to buy in feed.

Co-ordinator of the Sponsor A Cow Charity, Bob Holschier, estimates 60 per cent of the cattle being slaughtered at the Tongala abattoir are dairy cows.

"Three and a half thousand dairy cows each week, not monthly or anything, each week three and a half thousand cows are being slaughtered," he says.

"That's the equivalent of eight dairy herds being slaughtered every week. So it doesn't take long to destroy the dairy industry to be honest."
